Good morning, folks.
While in Vienna there are house numbers as in most of the world, that wasn't the case before 1770, when this system was introduced. Prior, there were house names. If you spot all kinds of sculptures, paintings and other distinctive elements on the facades, they're not only for aesthetics, but they also used to be a necessity.

Wow, thank you for sharing! I had no idea about the history of the house numbering system. Yes, old buildings have such unique appearances, but I didn’t realize they served a practical purpose as well! 😯
If I recall, my wife’s family who is from Stow on the Wool in the Cotswold of England, had (and may still) have names on the homes
