You will cause people to lose more sats by insisting they run their own Lightning node for receiving #zaps than if you simply taught them to use custodial services responsibly and move funds to self-custody regularly.

If you are going to make love to the corn, you have to learn how to kiss first.
Or something like that…..
😂 I highly recommend running a LN node for anyone who wants to, especially to learn more about bitcoin and lightning. But that’s a small subset of people. Most people only need a mobile node app like Phoenix or Breez for lightning payments. But for Nostr specifically, self-custody options aren’t there yet.
I would agree with this approach. I have had success with treating new users of bitcoin like my students. Adults get just as overwhelmed and are even more stubborn when something becomes more complicated than it needs to be. Most people learn this way. I try to meet them where they are at and work from there.
Yes, especially when thinking of new users on nostr who have never used bitcoin. Receiving zaps requires a good deal of knowledge, and the commitment of at least a fair amount of funds to have adequate inbound liquidity and a setup that won’t get you rugged by a bad channel partner. And even with all the preparation in the world, force channel closures happen and *poof* there goes whatever you made in zaps because you had to pay high fees for the closure and reopening a new channel. Meeting people where they’re at, like you said, is what it’s about. At some point, for some people, that includes running their own full routing LN node for everything. For most people, it won’t ever mean that.
Yes, 💯 and imagine if you’re the new user od nostr and bitcoin and you put in all of the effort learn and to run a node and there’s a forced closure of your channel. Is that person going to speak highly of their experience?
"You will cause people to lose more sats by insisting they use their own keys and withdraw from exchanges than if you simply taught them to DCA on exchanges responsibly."
Sounds a lot like a udi take.
Does it, though?
I know I lost quite a few sats (far more than I keep in my Alby wallet) trying to set up and use my lightning node, pay fees for channels, additional liquidity, etc. Then if I factor in the sats I lost on dumb user error as well - I could zap for the rest of the year on that.
I no longer have any open lightning channels on my node, by design.
And I'm relatively technical, had no problem at all building a raspi or working in a linux CLI. I can't imagine what it would be like for your barber.
Lol exactly! Same here. I ran my own routing node for a year. There are absolutely valid and good reasons for doing so, and should the need arise again I would, but if the only reason for doing it is to receive zaps then the risks have to be weighed against the benefits, and the risks include the individual technical abilities of the person running the node. I know many people who I would NEVER suggest running their own routing node because they’d lose everything 😂
This. Many Bitcoiners are terrible at reading the room and knowing their audience.
Good point. At Coin.Space wallet we have always said. It’s for day to day transactions and still non custodial. Hot wallets are fast and easy but run your own node to HODL.
Or maybe using a cryptocurrency would be a convenient solution.
Still really looking forward to Bolt12. That way you only need a non-custodial wallet for everything.
