Somehow I see this as Musk trying to play catch-up under the guise of safety
I won’t speak to Elon’s motivations. But many of the signatories of this petition are actually well-respected AI researchers, themselves.

What do you think - FUD or a real concern?
It’s a real concern, I think. I think there’s genuine ethical questions about this research forging ahead without careful consideration of the risks.
That’s the sense I’m getting, too.
Feels like that moment came up rapidly. From “it’s smart but not aware/intelligent” to “holy s*** let’s slow our roll”
AI is like a runaway train rn and I applaud the pace and innovation, but I have concerns about transparency, who is doing what and why. Who is getting what out of it, and all the behind the scenes stuff. I also wonder if the people involved in this know what they are doing and where it could go-who is responsible for the consequences?
This is never going to happen for the same reason nuclear weapons are never going away.

Sam Altman had a good point in his interview with Lex Fridman. You have to actually build the innovation and see what the problems actually are before trying to solve them. We can’t solve all our future problems before we know what they are.
AI projects need to be allowed, and transparent.
Hope to see more open source models after appeals to the government like that!
They're just trying to use the state to hamstring OpenAI rather than outcompete them.
The future is a handful of normal people surrounded by hysterical crazy people & psychopaths…
Realistically, this is likely to be signalling to raise awareness. The only way to pause this is to spook the lawmakers. But their ban hammer is heavy & I’m not sure it makes sense to stop when other major powers act independently…
Eventually it will end in a butlarian jihad and the mentats will rise to prominence in their place.
