This is a tough one. Until you experience censorship yourself. It is one of those things that you know exists, but it does not affect you. So why should I care?
Kind of like convincing people to start carrying a gun with them wherever they go. They have not been mugged before so why should they need a gun to protect themselves and their loved ones?
After being censored hundreds of times while trying to save lives. As well as being robbed at gun point before. Only now do I know the true value of freedom of speech and being able to carry the right tool to properly defend myself and my loved ones with equal lethal force.
To try and convince someone that censorship resistance is important. You nees to get them to walk a mile in your shoes. They may not be willing to take the risk on their primary accounts, but maybe have the conversation of you do not know what it is like.
Then give them a burner account that is freshly made and dare them to say things that are controversial, or wrong think. They will then understand what it is like to be censored and fighting to get their voice back. Either that, or if this is a random conversation in person. Just slap a piece of duct tape on their mouth mid conversation and run away. Both would have a similar effect.
Then they will be able to finally see the value in censorship resistance. Once they know what it is like to feel the ban hammer of being silenced.
I agree with this. But here’s the weird thing… I’ve tried with folks who are making backup accounts on IG because they’ve had accounts shutdown or know there’s a risk, and it’s still it’s falling on deaf ears. Are they that addicted to the platform? Or are they so focused on the short term they can’t see this potential?
You have to look at this from a more simplistic point of view.
Many people do not have the strength of character to resist their primal instincts. We humans are primates. It is hard wired to want to be a part of the social group. While it is mostly the alphas that have the courage to forge out on their own paths. Others are followers.
Once they have found their social group they are more likely to fight and do anything to retain their position within it. This means that having backup accounts. Compromising their morals and ethics. Anything and everything is on the table as long as they do not have to suffer the risk of being expelled from their place in the social group.
This is not something easily overcome. Trying to convince beta primates, or lower to start acting like alphas is akin to asking a sheep to learn how to act like a wolf. It is a tall order that many times is near impossible. So if you want to disrupt the primate mentality a shock to the system is required. You need to focus on rewiring the hardwired instincts within them if you want them to enact any meaningful change in their lives.
