I’ve heard a lot that normies don’t care about censorship resistance, which is true, but only because they haven’t experienced the problem yet.

How do we get people to care about a problem that they won’t experience until they do?

Freeze their bank accounts

They need to disagree with the powers in charge. For example, a lot of left leaning friends and family are all of a sudden for limited government because of the Trump admin.

Not possible

just wait gov will do its job.

Watch it thrive in a place that is highly censored

eh, good luck. Not only will they not care, they will vote for people to enforce it eventually because it will be against something they "believe" in.

There is no 'until they do' they are fluid, their opinions will change with whatever is the dominant culture. They'll never need it.

One doesn't need to experience it first, but understand the implications and consequences of the practice. For example, a society where censorship is the norm cannot innovate and cannot prosper...

It seems the root cause of many issues is people don’t think more than 1 step ahead. So these problems are just invisible to most people.

Must be so strange moving through life like that. Like driftwood getting pushed around by waves.

Yeah, and this might also be a consequence of censorship, not only preventing us from thinking in certain directions, but also deeper...Quite possible.

We need to tell them.

I came to Nostr because I had a need to know.

Locked out & censored from LinkedIn. Suspended, censored & locked out from X.

Found Nostr. Fell in love with Nostr. Nostr is my way of digital communication. 🧡🗽💜

They will never care like they wouldn't care for SSL if it wouldn't exist. Let's just build great products that everyone loves where censorship resistance itself is not the product and just a included feature instead. I really love the idea that we focus on tools that enable building great online communities for every possible niche combined with local llms for personal discovery.

This is the way.

The censorship resistance, privacy, etc should be built into lower layers and invisible to the plebs by a benevolent elite of programmers and engineers.

i don't think it's possible, most of them even want an authority to control and censorship. When i orange pilled someone they never cared about censorship resistance bc its not a problem for them. Like someone said already the best chance is built something that they want and like that is censorship resistant, with nostr the best argument for normies is probably zaps and interoperability.

This is a tough one. Until you experience censorship yourself. It is one of those things that you know exists, but it does not affect you. So why should I care?

Kind of like convincing people to start carrying a gun with them wherever they go. They have not been mugged before so why should they need a gun to protect themselves and their loved ones?

After being censored hundreds of times while trying to save lives. As well as being robbed at gun point before. Only now do I know the true value of freedom of speech and being able to carry the right tool to properly defend myself and my loved ones with equal lethal force.

To try and convince someone that censorship resistance is important. You nees to get them to walk a mile in your shoes. They may not be willing to take the risk on their primary accounts, but maybe have the conversation of you do not know what it is like.

Then give them a burner account that is freshly made and dare them to say things that are controversial, or wrong think. They will then understand what it is like to be censored and fighting to get their voice back. Either that, or if this is a random conversation in person. Just slap a piece of duct tape on their mouth mid conversation and run away. Both would have a similar effect.

Then they will be able to finally see the value in censorship resistance. Once they know what it is like to feel the ban hammer of being silenced.

I agree with this. But here’s the weird thing… I’ve tried with folks who are making backup accounts on IG because they’ve had accounts shutdown or know there’s a risk, and it’s still it’s falling on deaf ears. Are they that addicted to the platform? Or are they so focused on the short term they can’t see this potential?

You have to look at this from a more simplistic point of view.

Many people do not have the strength of character to resist their primal instincts. We humans are primates. It is hard wired to want to be a part of the social group. While it is mostly the alphas that have the courage to forge out on their own paths. Others are followers.

Once they have found their social group they are more likely to fight and do anything to retain their position within it. This means that having backup accounts. Compromising their morals and ethics. Anything and everything is on the table as long as they do not have to suffer the risk of being expelled from their place in the social group.

This is not something easily overcome. Trying to convince beta primates, or lower to start acting like alphas is akin to asking a sheep to learn how to act like a wolf. It is a tall order that many times is near impossible. So if you want to disrupt the primate mentality a shock to the system is required. You need to focus on rewiring the hardwired instincts within them if you want them to enact any meaningful change in their lives.

I hear that people respond well to peer pressure, indirect threats, and shaming.

Problem is convenience.

Solution is education

For education, generally I start with a universal problem like inflation (and related opportunity cost). Which is inconvenient for everyone. Once someone understands it, that’s the best time to shill freedom tech and its products. Because that is where the solutions are. The exploration starts with bitcoin and continue on to learn every other FOSS project

The real challenge is, how we amplify this message more from our close circles to everyone who doesn’t care (because they don’t know). Our true competitor is time. Rest assured, everyone and everything will follow

If you have spent any amount of time on any legacy platform then a decision has been made as to which content you are shown and which content you are not shown. Curation is censorship. Everyone has been exposed to the problem.

you/we can't

they don't want to know and will continue rather not knowing until they die because it is easier. this is not a new problem. same problem, same people, new bodies, new names, same sheep behaviour.

ants, grasshoppers

blind, eyes open

asleep, awake

By becoming the problem, haha

Is to protect one self , that’s nostrl is 😁

Most people can achieve the same form of censorship-resistance provided by Nostr simply by sharing their post to multiple social media platforms. All of the benefit with none of the downside.

Yes, being deplatformed, banned, or otherwise censored sucks.

But using a bunch of alpha software on a network most people have never heard of is not the solution people want it to be.

IMO Nostr's biggest selling point is LN integration and that keeps it relevant as many networks have not put Bitcoin on the front line of their product.

Clearly we need to start mass reporting everything until they all get banned by ai

Lots of honest hard working Russian nationals had pension funds frozen by Euroclear.
