I live in Alaska and was seriously just thinking about this.
I ordered the stuff...Just waiting on the case because it takes a couple weeks.
I've got an S9 and Phantek T30s ordered. It will be my first miner so I want to check it out before I order the 3d printed case.
Now I just have to hope I can at least break even with the electricity cost.
My wife uses this space heater during the winter. It does not mine bitcoin.

The way I see it, the energy spent on heat is a fixed cost. Any sats back from the S9 heater are a rebate kind of like how I got a rebate from the Oshi App when I bought the case.
I don't expect to get my sats back on my heater. It's not an investment. I expect to lose sats if I look at it that way. If it's a rebate, however, the sats are free.
I'm not doing it for the money. I'm doing it for the game theory. If bitcoin mining becomes unprofitable from a fiat perspective, who will run miners?
We'll need to find other ways to keep the hashrate high enough to prevent 51% attacks.
Energy used on heat that would be spent anyway is free bitcoin so the cost doesn't matter.
As the block rewards get smaller and smaller, I think mining pools will make less and less sense and yolo solo mining becomes more important. It's not profitable from an EV calculation, but people like to gamble. Lotto tickets are -EV, but states have no problem selling them.
That's a really good way of looking at it.
S9 is not even that hard. Plugs into a regular outlet. Get a more quiet fam and use that crypto cloaks case (or make your own if you’ve got the tools and a fun idea) and then just plug the guy in and you’re basically good.
Definitely change the fans though. 😆
What about to get
It mining? Or is that automatic once you plug it in?
Was much simpler than I thought. Just get a login for whatever pool you want to use, and then enter it into the settings page. If you’ve ever logged into a router and changed your password or network name you have all the necessary skills.
Thank you for finally putting that into simple words. This is part of why I’ve held off on playing with a miner cause every walk through I can find is written for tech nerds by tech nerds, and while my wife thinks I’m a nerd I totally ain’t. I’ll think I’ll stick with my plan to get the start9 and a tiny pc both up and functional first though, just because I have all those pieces, I just gotta get ‘em put together and turned on lol
I was a bit intimidated myself and sat on my miners for like 2 months without doing anything. It was not at all as complicated as I imagined. The machine is dumb, give it the internet and some pool login credentials and it just starts hashing. It wants to hash really bad 😆

Thanks for the info! I’ve not yet had a chance to actually get to fiddling with it. I’ve got a 13 month old and my wife is like 40 weeks pregnant and I work all the time. Wild times over here lol when I do get to it I’ll be sure to find the telegram! Thanks!
