Is it actually good? What trade offs have you noticed

#GrapheneOS is just user-controlled Android. No training wheels. It's very good, but anyone coming from an iPhone is in for an adjustment period. Very little hand holding.

Iโ€™m fine with no hand holding. But can we actually use the apps we would use day to day more privately?

Maps. Pay. Socials. Would be my main 3

Maps - Yes, Google Maps still works but there are other FOSS options too like Organic Maps

Google Pay - AFAIK this probably won't work

Socials should be fine

The good news is that the Graphene forums have a ton of discussion, so you can usually check there to see of certain things work.

Thanks for this. Will check it out. Still deciding whether the work is worth the gain

I use maps to find places, but OSMAnd works great for navigation. I copy the gps coordinates over. Though it's not as polished as maps, it gets the job done without an internet connection.

Thanks for the tips. Weighing up if privacy gains are worth the extra work

No problem. I won't downplay the extra work involved. You have to really be dedicated.

But you don't have to go all in on everything. Small steps go a long way.

Except for Pay, most things work the same. You have the optionality of trying different options of privacy vs convenience through seperate somewhat isolated profiles.

"Challenging" is a smart word to use. It IS a challenge (like anything worth doing), but the result is freedom.

It took me a long adjustment period, but it forced me away from dumping all of my eggs in to Apple's basket.

Needed to hear this. Iโ€™ve taken all the steps I can take while still using MacOS and iOS, always knowing itโ€™s not enough

Same here. I can never go back. It was like quitting a drug.

Thats the spirit. You can't strongly advocate for open source from an iPhone.

Whatโ€™s the oldest pixel youโ€™d recommend using with Graphene? I want to try it out before spending the money on a newer pixel.

I recently bought a refurbished Pixel 6a from Google and it runs GrapheneOS like a charm!

I've been onGrapheneOS for twoyears now and love it. definitely want to give Linux a shot

Awesome! Hopefully you have started your KYC-free stack as well!
