I have never been so terrified by a book before. 😳

"1984" by George Orwell depicts a potential reality that could unfold if we continue on our current path. I believe it is crucial for every #Pleb to read this book in order to comprehend the gravity of what we are up against.

I will attempt to write a summary once I feel I have proper grasped its meaning. It's not easy!

It’s truly terrifying considering current events. As a follow up I recommend ’A brave new world’ - Aldous Huxley.

Great book and it's one of two books the government reckons could "radicalise" you. 1984 and oddly, Lord of the Rings. True story.

If the Gov doesn't want you to read certain books then you should definitely read them.

Because it reveals their secret end goal, it's so relatable.

It is. I've read it for the first time many years ago and did so again a few months ago. It's more "factual" now than ever before. Almost scary yet eye opening.

I am going to read it multiple times. I got a sense that it is not a normal book, it is going to stay with me for a long time.

Yes it will. I also recommend reading his book Animal Farm.

As it should. πŸ‘

1984 used to be required reading in many high school literature classes.

Has apparently been confused with a how-to manual and is therefore discouraged.

I understand what you're saying you are saying. There is a whole category of books dedicated to explaining '1984', I will start reading those after finishing this one.

In the German audiobook version on Audible the foreword is written and spoken by Robert Habeck, current green Economics Minister in Germany, responsible for lots of the 1984 stuff happening rn.

It's happening everywhere, mostly in "developed" countries. Tech peoples need to be very careful.

Yes. Especially the EU is on a very dangerous path right now.

EUSSR is failed union. The Bureaucaste just doesn’t know it yet and they keep digging themselves deeper and deeper.

Hope the Western Europeans are more of a freedom lovers than hedonists though.

For Eastern Europe I still think we might have a chance.

The EU is better at using its power to control virtually everything. It is literally becoming a leader in censorship worldwide. An unelected body should not have this much control.

They are all same!

People should be on the streets against Chatcontrol but nobody gives af. It's the end of freedom, most open source projects etc. Probably using nostr will be considered an illegal act once it's enforced.

True, They hate free speech; every day, they will be blackmailing some other social media. But Nostr will surprise them; they will have no CEO to call. πŸ€™

isn’t it eurocentric to think that’s mostly a developed countries thing? πŸ€”

not me forgetting to remove all the replies, sorry guys

In not only the Eurozone but also in most developed countries, as well as some developing countries, I believe that it is more closely associated with the centralization of power & tech.

this term refers to the trend of placing western cultures (including us) at the center of the discourse. i used it as the closest to what i meant, though not all developed countries are western, ofc

and still, i think both developing and developed countries are in trouble – new tech will probably invented it developed countries, but would be used in developing ones as well.

centralisation of power is the main problem here, developed countries have more opportunities to resist repressive laws because they have well-established social institutions, while developing ones may lack such institutions, leading to a quicker erosion of liberties.

btw, there are some updates on Protasevich and Sapega case - you can learn what happens with independent journalists when they do (and do not) coordinate with a velvet dictatorship, and how sometimes only public outcry can help πŸ€•

Fun fact:

In nostr, when you report a note for spam or illegal content, the report is given an event id of 1984

Try "The Mandibles" and brave new world.

Funny saying I read once, "George Orwell said that we would all have cameras in our house so that the governments could watch everything that we do. What he didn't predict was that some would stand in line for hours and pay over $1000 to bring those cameras in."

On my list to re read this one again after I finish Atlas Shrugged

Yes, it's complex, but soooo brilliant

Yes. Everyone should read it! You are right. You're going to write a summary!?✨ I love your passion. πŸ”₯ I would love to read your summary. πŸ«‚πŸ€
