Is there a term for when someone receives something for free and the provider of that thing is not responsible to them, but to whoever is paying for it?

That’s interesting in that it could be construed as either a good or bad thing depending on who is reading it. I can’t think of another term off the top of my head

Social media companies make money by selling ads, so instead of providing the best possible service to the users they do things like write algorithms that increase ad revenue at the expense of people's sanity.
