Currently 5. Planning to wait until 6 or 7, maybe later depending on how responsible he is with things.

Maybe get him a simple but high quality swiss knife and teach him to be careful and carve wood.

Oh and if you can, teach him to sharpen blades with a waterstone. That's a very useful skill.

I need to learn this skill myself

There are some pretty good YT tutorials.

And as usual: Practise makes perfect. Also has a meditative effect. 😄
