We got the OPINEL Outdoor Junior No. 07 for both our girls.

How old?

Currently 5, probably looking at 6 or 7 depending on how he matures.

How about no knife then? Too random mind at that age.

Tho with 8 to 10 i‘d suggest a swiss army knife. Could be useful for handy skills.

Depending on his mindset and development of course.

And a small one for starters also.

One you build together.

Swiss Army. You can turn a short conversation about a knife into “look at all the tools and what it can do.” Your heart will swell the first time you see him pull it out to turn a screw or saw a branch. Not the best knife, but the best tool for a beginner.

how old is he?

Currently 5. Planning to wait until 6 or 7, maybe later depending on how responsible he is with things.

Maybe get him a simple but high quality swiss knife and teach him to be careful and carve wood.

Oh and if you can, teach him to sharpen blades with a waterstone. That's a very useful skill.

I need to learn this skill myself

There are some pretty good YT tutorials.

And as usual: Practise makes perfect. Also has a meditative effect. 😄

Here are some options.

Hard to beat a swiss army knife. Classic design, lots of cool factor with the extra tools. Perhaps a model like the Recruit.

Downside to the Swiss Army knife is that it's a slip joint and could close on fingers.

A small fixed blade won't have that problem. Simple, more durable, easy to clean and sharpen. Something like the Becker Remora.

Or you could go with a locking folder, but sometimes the lock mechanism is too stiff for smaller hands to depress.

My EDC is a Buck bantam 285 that I've had for 9+ years. It's a good knife.
