The 16 year old kid said it was his car, but that he didn't have insurance. When his father showed up, he said that he did have insurance. We exchanged info, I took photographs, I filed an online police report.

I can't drive my truck home. I'll be borrowing a friend's truck, a friend who is in Central America presently.

I hope my truck will be okay here. Gang members might break in trying to steal shit during the night, given that it's not a safe part of town and the police don't respond. I took everything out of it, but if the windows get broken I will be out of pocket.

My insurance policy is not to insure. I'm a risk taker and I've saved at least 30k so far by doing that, so if I'm out of pocket for broken windows, or even for this entire repair for some reason or another, it was still a good bet.

Interesting it's legal in NZ to not have insurance as it's a public liability issue and pretty much required everywhere else.. afaik. Good to know and glad everyone is unhurt.

There was a bill to make 3rd party liability insurance compulsary. I put in a submission against, but only because (as I recommended) alternate forms of demonstrating capability to pay should be made available like being bonded. I made the argument that Muslims consider insurance a form of gambling and therefore a sin, so these alternate forms should be made available to them. I made the financial argument that companies with large fleets of vehicles save a lot of money overseas by being bonded instead of insured and this would help our economy.

The bill did not pass, there were no modifications toward my recommendation. Today there still is no requirement.

I just found the submission I was referring to and put it online: https://mikedilger.com/3pi.txt

Do politicians read things citizens write in New Zealand? And take those into account?

I think they do.

I put in a hate speech submission. There were so many hate speech submissions (submissions against) that the cabinet minister who was assigned that task retired from politics entirely (well, I don't know the cause and effect, but the government silently decided not to go ahead, and he quit politics for unknown reasons).

Interesting that there's no compulsory car insurance. Didn't know that.

Hope your truck will be ok too! Hilux is so big and badass. Glad your friends truck was available . Does everyone drive trucks there?

How does the process work? I’d reckon the cops have to verify whose fault it was (for insurance to kick in) - also do you have to tow it to a specific mechanic based on the insurance provider or any mechanic ?

According to the police report website, the police will not be involved as nobody was injured, it is up to use to sort it. They just wanted a report.

I will wait for the boy or his father to contact me about if their insurance needs to come out. If not I'll contact them again and get it sorted. If it is up to me I'll have someone tow the truck to Manawatu Toyota and have them fix it, and then charge the boy. I might have leniency on him, in exchange for him listening to an old man's wisdom for 15 minutes. I might be able to make a difference in his life. He seemed like a good kid, just had a cheap car with bald tires in a downpour.

Aww go easy on the kid, he probably traumatised as it is
