Got my #ham #radio callsign this morning. I got a contact on my first radio check had a great first convo. I also tried to check in to a nightly net but bummed I couldn't reach the repeater.

Gonna need a bigger antenna 😄

Congrats brother!!!

I’ve been considering it for ages. I’d love to hit another nostrich up on ham! 🫂

How long did you study for the test?

Thanks! Not long. I did the practice questions on hamstudy.org and enough practice exams to feel confident and went for it. My grandad was into when I was a kid so that probably stuck too.

But if you know ohms law and learn the regulations I know you'll do great. You can take it online now too!

Congrats!

Congrats nostr:npub1mcneaunh0n9qy54sse0vr06nwhejzghumfjlmu3r54ugwx83qhlshqwtll , repeater may need to have a PL code or similar to open. Keep trying!

Thanks! There's another that is on a mountain that I can reach that is linked to this one I couldn't reach.

I've learned a lot in a couple weeks!

I had a mobile in my car that could act as a repeater for my handy talky. The mobile had a lot more power, and a big whip antenna.

Don't forget about push up poles too. There's also internet links to repeaters with PTT. I can't remember them all right now. But there are several like #Echolink. Congrats..👏👍😊

Unfortunately no poles allowed in my HOA so I have a 70cm/2m jpole mounted up in my attic for stealth transmissions. It's working excellently for me so far.

I'm working on my general and have plans to put up a fan dipole in the eve of the attic for HF.

I seem to remember that a ham tower was protected from some homeowner restrictions by federal law.

Because of required emergency communication assistance during a national emergency.

Which is part of your license..¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On the other hand you wouldn't want to fuck your fellow homeowners over.

You could also rig up a cheap handy talky in repeater mode and attach it to a balloon, a kite or a drone..🪁😊

TV antennas are protected but unfortunately amateur radio doesn't enjoy those protections, I really wish they were. But so far it's not impacted my ability to get QSOs on 2m/70cm.

My bad..👍😊

It's all good. In an ideal world you'd be right haha

I have read about proposed legislation to protect ham operator rights but you know how that goes. They'll talk about it for 30 years and make no decisions.

Which radio are you using?

My base station is an Icom ID-5100. And I have a Icom ID-50 for on the go.

I also have a Yaesu FT-65r that is what I started with before upgrading. That's my back up for the time being.
