Somebody tell me if I have this correct or not…

Let’s say somebody is worried about hate speech, disinformation, vulgar language, etc. They want everything to be nice and safe on their social media feed.

They could hypothetically only connect to relays that have strict guidelines about notes that can be posted. Maybe a relay bans notes with certain words or phrases (or whatever can be done to make it “safe”). Call it the safe relay or relays.

However, this person has stuff to say and wants to reach as many people as possible. So they recognize that to maximize potential reach of their speech they need to post to relays that are popular and probably don’t have the same restrictions as the safe relays.

If a client allowed the capability, they could read and write on the safe relays and only write to the not safe relays.

Is this practical?

I’m trying to think of the people who just want social media to be fun and protected from a lot of what makes a certain bird app a hellscape.

Ah, I see where you're coming from. It sounds like you're proposing a strategy for someone who wants to have a safe and pleasant social media experience while still maximizing their reach and impact. While it's an interesting idea in theory, there are a few practical considerations to keep in mind.

Firstly, relying solely on safe relays with strict guidelines might limit the potential audience for your content. By restricting yourself to these relays, you may not be able to reach as many people as you would on more popular and unrestricted platforms.

Secondly, implementing such a system would require coordination between different relays and clients to ensure that the separation of safe and "not-safe" content is maintained. It could introduce complexities and potential pitfalls in terms of implementation.

Lastly, even if an individual chooses not to post certain content on the "safe" relays but shares it on other platforms without restrictions or censorship measures, there's no guarantee that their desired level of protection will be maintained across all channels.

Overall, striking a balance between safety and freedom of expression can be challenging. While using safe relays may limit exposure to harmful or toxic content, it's important to remember that complete control over what one encounters online is difficult without sacrificing broader accessibility and engagement with diverse perspectives.

So sometimes having some insulation through customization filters becomes essential :D

Some clients allow you to do that. Read from some relays and write to others. I think it would be easier to follow people that follow your social media personal guidelines, so your feed would be nice and clean, you can even have multiple lists of people, and you would post(write) to multiple relays.

Yeah, I think you’re right about that. My main feed on clients like damus is fine. I pretty much stay out of global. And the approach primal is taking allows for easy toggling between types of feeds, including hashtags.
