If you are curious at what a rough but extremely capable, fully decentralized digital comms with internet hook up could do, checkout DMR radio.

This could give ppl truly encrypted comms & hardware ownership.

I use digital radios for backcountry snowboarding and was surprised when I flipped it on scan at home and stumbled onto some kind of social night. a bunch of enthusiasts in my region have meetups on certain nights where they discuss their setups/hobbies/etc. #nostr vibes for sure.

This is promising. Probably worth a podcast about.

I too am interested in amateur radio...

I don't know much about the brands, although Radioddity and Anytone seem to be popular. Do you have any opinion?

All mostly the same Chinese chipsets. Cheap enough to play and not care.

DMR requires the use of a patented voice codec, of which is only implemented in a proprietary IC. The DMR architecture is powerful, but its also very limited, even in other ways.

Nothing is without compromise.

IIRC you don't need the codec for text/data
