So with a private relay, you add it as one of your relays such that all your notes get posted there. But that's it right? Because it's private it doesn't get relayed anywhere, just stored on the relay?

Because "A relay doesn't talk to another relay" according to https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nostr#how-does-nostr-work

Context: Wanting to startup a private relay for funs.

So far so good according to my understanding. If you had your own relay you could use it and invite specific other friends to use it so that no matter what happened to the other relays you would continue to be able to interact.

Or family. If it's just on my local network for example.

Thanks for the confirmation!

What Eric said. But remember, you should be on multiple relays. Thus anything you post will be on multiple relays and transmited across the network.

Including your relay, so if for any reason you needed all relays lost your data your relay would still have a copy..

Thanks. Yeah, so it's like an archive for my own (and any special parties') notes then.
