Yeah I get that, I find it funny they can't spin up a btcpay server, considering what they are making.
Discussion
Lol exactly.
Start9 has done exactly that. They sell their hardware for BTC using BTCPayServer.
Umbrel hasn't.
I wouldn't trust em. Number one rule is don't trust, verify. Their platform is proprietary.
And they don't even accept Bitcoin when they're selling Bitcoin nodes.
Wrong vibe. This is a big reason why I switched to Start9.
Umbrel has the better UX, but in every other way Start9 is better.
Can you please send me the setup guide for Start9 thanks
Of course.

Thanks
I'm not a fan of today's hardware announcement, but I'm not their target audience. I'm running Umbrel on my own hardware, and the software seems good so far.
Indeed we're not the target audience for things like this. But I'd direct a newb to Start9 for a preinstalled node rather than Umbrel personally. Just purely because Umbrel isn't FOSS.
Why start9 versus ronin tanto/samourai dojo? (These are two at the top of my list rn)
Ah is start9 a full server and tanto just a Bitcoin node? *more research needed* 😅
Yeah it's a full "bundle node."
I think this is a great way to introduce people to running nodes because they can see the full potential of what running a node gets them.
Cool. So if I want to self host everything - photos, media, etc. - and not be reliant on iCloud for a backup, something like Start9 is the answer? Pretty new to this but fascinated 🧐
Correct. You can run Syncthing and Nextcloud for your own cloud server.
You can run Vaultwarden which lets you host your own Bitwarden instance.
You can host Gitea to have "your own GitHub" so to speak.
You can run LNBits and BTCPayServer to sell stuff for Bitcoin and a lot more.
You can run a lightning node of course.
You can run your own Nostr relay.
You can run a local instance of Mempool.
You can run encrypted messengers including ones integrated with lightning like Sphinx Chat.
You can sell access to files.
You can use Joinmarket with a friendly UX.
You can run your own media server.
Your own search engine.
Your own blog.
Robosats locally.
And more.
Exactly! (so don't need Umbrel)
So pretty much anything I could imagine lol
This is awesome. When you say “run robosats locally” what would that look like? Meaning instead of connecting to another robot via the RS server?
Any significant downsides to the self hosted setup (other than technical understanding/difficulty level)? How about backups for all your data in case of fire or flood?
As @`Xanny` and others have pointed out already, their are a lot of issues with Umbrel and personally wouldn't direct a noobs toward them. Noobs are looking to get rekted.
While I can't comment on the below pages claims and the author does admit bias working for a competitor, it does point out a lot of historic security issues with Umbrel and their response that should give anyone pause before purchasing any of their stuff. Not spreading FUD just spreading knowledge.
