what would be a better solution to how usernames, display names and NIP-05 are currently done?

seems like a mess, couldn’t even really explain the necessity of owning a NIP-05 address to a newcomer

yep, just use one imo

which would you pick?

and also if they’re unique, how would you sort out users, that have the same usernames?

i just use the main name field, and don’t care if it’s not unique

imposters and scams, what about that?

don’t really care

the people falling for that will, not myself tho.

curious to see what the devs and community think of this

Easy.

Don’t you know that Internet is made up of pedophiles and children.

All children are really 50 year old men. And all children are FBI agents.

Web of trust.

Meant to say. All women on the internet are 50 year old men and all children are FBI.

Because it makes you look cool?

does it?

We could just establish a reputation model and only people getting invited by someone else can join nostr. Problem solved 🙃

this is not bluesky

Should have used this emoji 🤪

Depends on who you are. For example, we knew that nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m was the real Jack because he once used NIP-05 to verify the official Cash App domain.

If you’re someone who is likely a target for spoofed accounts, having a NIP-05 helps prove ownership of a domain and verifies your pubkey has access to it.

There’s need for it, but it needs more clarity and one clear cut solution

Couldn't we do away with display names and just have usernames BE display names? They're both changeable at will, are they not?

nprofile?

a mouthful to say and also too ambiguous to comprehend 🤔
