It's interesting that the places where the govt took the longest to subjugate the native population are still some of the most free places in the country- mainly the lands of the comanche and the apache (and some of the other nomadic tribes)
Besides minerals/mining there's not much interest in trying to control large swaths of land that are harsher to survive on.
Cochise county alone is the size of Rhode island and Connecticut combined (I think). Same deal for west texas. But you better build structures similar to how these guys are, catch ALL the rainwater, and be steeped in land restoration/permaculture principles to plant the water, build soil and grow anything
