yes windows is a heavy operating system. if you want something light there is Android for that. the two compliment each other perfectly. i have android on Phone and Tablet and Windows on a Gaming Laptop and Xeon Workstation.

If you don't play Video Games and don't use any kind of professional software like Autodesk then i suppose you don't need Windows. But then you can just use Apple.

I haven't had a printer in 20 years. I was told in college in early 2000s that printing out information on paper was low-brow and i have accepted that concept. anybody who is unable to receive and view information digitally is too dumb for me to associate with.

there is argument to be made that Microsoft and Apple spy on you, or that they are evil monopolies ... and i would accept those arguments. but i don't accept the argument that Windows doesn't work for its intended purpose of running games and professional software.

i hope more people use Linux but i also wish they would stop lying that it is "better" than Windows. as much as i despise people who use Apple at least they don't talk about Apple as much as Linux people talk about Linux. they just pull out their $4,000 macbook that can't run any modern games or professional software and expect everybody to be impressed by how thin, metal and expensive it is.

Well paint me low brow πŸ˜‚

Working on our farm I value being able to print out planting guides or animal husbandry info to take out into the gardens and paddocks.

My main purpose for changing was the privacy aspect and also because I value FOSS and believe that outside of the walled garden things can be build in a more innovative and interesting way.

This has been on my to do list for a long time but I’m not technically minded so it was a daunting task. I’m proud of myself for making the change and want to encourage others to do the same.

yeah that's what tablets are for. a tablet costs about the same as a printer, but doesn't waste paper and toner and can also be used for other things than just displaying a static image.

granted, tablets designed for harsh environments ( like on a farm ) are more expensive than consumer grade ones meant to be used mostly indoors.

congratulations on your technical accomplishment of migrating to Linux and hope your continue to progress towards being more technically minded in the future.

In calling it an abomination, I was referring to the spyware thing. It's still a fine solution for many people so long as they're aware of the risks. In fact I would like to do more gaming on Windows - then my laptop would have some use outside of work, but I haven't had enough time for the past couple of years.
