as a protocol i think it'd be nicer if people were inclined to stay out of their own free will, but i'm as dumb as the next person
You cant make anybody do anything but... engaging with their notes, boosting visibility, helping when they ask, avoiding setting unrealistic zap-spectations... I think those help. A welcoming environment goes beyond saying hi, here's $3.

Nature fixes stupid. A theory sometimes referred to as natural selection.
However that can take a few generations somerimes to work itself out.

Objectively this is a sufficiently fast, smooth, and beautiful GUI without bugs.
Subjectively; people use a social app for the people, content, interaction and connection. This value is found by tailored discovery of aforementioned, which can be achieved by an open and permissionless marketplace where suggestion- and moderation algorithms race to become as good as possible at delivering value.
More generally:
Delivering a better, cheaper, quicker, or unique experience compared to existing alternatives. Where the benefit of switching to the new solution is obviously greater than the cost/effort of switching and inertia to the current solution.
Rubicon model. If they have already made the decision to join nostr with all the hurdles, they will evaluate, weather it was worth it or not. So in conclusion lowering the barrier to enter or increasing the exceeded expectations
