With metal seed backups...
Is it a feature or is it a bug that if people find it, it's quite easily readable?

You just use a bip38 key to add a password to your private key - we used to use BIP38 keys to make Bitstashers metal wallets
It's a feature. You want to be able to read it in the future even after a disaster has struck.
What would be a bug is if it was easy to find, or if it was easy to reveal.
A lot of plates have a cover or are placed in tamper evident containers or sealed with tamper evident seals.
Typically you should know it is hidden well enough to never be found, or you should keep it somewhere private but accessible and check that it's tamper seal has not been broken or compromised from time to time.
Finding that exact line between hidden and monitorable is something everyone needs to figure out for themselves.
Is this where bip-38 keys on cold storage cards prevail over seed plates? 😉
That's why things like Cryptosteel Capsule exist. You can only read it if you have enough time and it's much more photoproof than one flat plate backup. And if it's still not enough hard to read it for you, you can always use Shamir or Multisig so it's less valuable to obtain one share/key.
