Man, the story of Jonah is convicting.

For those just tuning in: Jonah didn't run because he was scared of the Ninevites. He ran because he didn't *want* them to repent. He didn't *want* God to be merciful to them. He was scared they might actually repent when he wanted them judged.

That mirror sure gets ugly sometimes.

Oof level:

The *Jonah was scarred* narrative annoys me both because it is blatently untrue AND it removes the mirror. It also deludes the way we are supposed to see Jonah as rightly and wrongly prefiguring Christ.

No sign shall be given to this generation except the sign of Jonah.

I read somewhere that Tarsus (where Jonah was running to) was in fact England (tin isle). Which makes sense if he was trying to get away from God.

He wasn't scared though. He told those guys to literally throw him into a raging sea. Guy was totally unafraid to die.

Who are the modern Nivevites? Who is it we don't want to repent? Blue haired liberal brigade of he/hims?

I've always thought he was referring to his own death and resurrection, but maybe I missed something.

And, yes, for me it's the anti-theistic Ts and Qs that are explicitly and unashamedly "coming for our kids." I'm more prone to turn to certain PPsalms. I suppose on a case by case sometimes the one is appropriate and sometimes the other.

Yeah. That story is rough.

It would be like a Jew being told by God, to go preach to Hitlers cabinet to repent. Knowing they probably would. He was like, “F that. Im out.”

Goes though all the stuff, finally goes there and preaches, (looking like a freak who had been through a storm and inside a fish for 3 days), and they all go, “this guy is for real” and repent.

Story ends with Jonah sitting on a hill, feeling sorry for himself, wishing God would kill them all.

When youve been affected by their BS enough, we can all prefer Gods justice to His mercy. Im already struggling with it.

Me too. I do think there's a time & place for the imprecatory psalms, but a warning first is merciful. And always, humility.

I want to see them cry snd knash teeth.

But what if mercy and revival comes first?

I better get on board.

Yep. Same, sometimes.

The apostles asked Jesus if they should call down fire from heaven. We are just like them (right?). On the one hand, Jesus said "no," but on the other hand, it's "not yet."

He also said, “You know not what Spirit you are of.”

Thats the one to really ponder.

...yesss. Good one. Dang. 🙏
