Just checked out global for the first time in weeks. I'm not sure if it's just the relays that I'm connected to, but it's really not that bad anymore. It appears that the spam has died down significantly.

That's probably what it is. I'm connected to a few paid relays, but not all of them are. Not sure if one takes precedence or not or if you get everything from all connected relays.
Seems a lot better for me too.
