I grew up largely without parental controls. And I think I’m fine.

Are parents today overly protective?

Yes, they are

Access to adult content is easier than ever and adult content is more prolific than ever today. Parents are not protective enough of online content and overly protective of the physical world.

Why do you feel it’s easier? In what respect?

Any 9 year old can go on their iPad and look up "boobies" and have an addiction for much of their life 😭

Yes, this. Porn and other adult content is far too easy to access for adolescents.

Is that different from a 9yo in 1998 doing that on a computer?

Time Magazine, July 3, 1995:

That’s what I’m trying to determine. If the iPad access is actually any easier than it was on the computer. Logically, yes, more portable, but not sure if that actually means easier access.

We also have better parental controls on tablet devices now that we didn’t even have back in those days.

Then I would say it's dependent on the parents to set up good parental controls

You don't even have to search for porn to see it online. It's fucking everywhere.

What I mean is is absolutely ridiculous that most parents couldn't give a shit about supervision for content their children consume but at the same time they feel they need to make their kids wear masks in public. Both of these actions are damaging.

But is it truly easier today? We had dirty magazines in my days - arguably just as easy to access

The access to first magazines in our days vs porn today is no where near as comparable. On top of that, the content featured in dirty magazines vs the content you can find on Google in a few clicks is no where near as comparable. The weird dark fetishistic aspects of pornography have gotten far more "hardcore" since the dirty magazines days.

Hmm. I don’t know if I agree. My first encounter with porn was when a friend visited a bestiality website. You can imagine my surprise as a kid at the time. We had much more variety of what is today considered illegal content. Maybe it was illegal then too but it sure as hell was super easy to access.

I should clarify: with online porn, which was easily accessible in my home (the computer) when adults were away

I have little ones, and I think we are. My wife and I had minimal supervision growing up also and we turned out ok. Is the present approach by parents though a necessary response to our / their world?

What’s the difference between today’s world and that of say … 1996?

I think it may have to do with access to too much information and ease of communication with others. This can presents a more complex and potentially dangerous world for kids. In 1996, danger presented itself mainly in the physical world but now there is the online / virtual world to be vigilant about.

Yes.

Same as you fren. But I think parents shouldn't let their kids have access to internet until their close to the adulthood.

I think many are...but that is a topic that can really get into the weeds. Parents need to raise their kids as they see fit. Those sheltered kids will one day become adults & learn about all the stuff their parents sheltered them from, one way or another. Personally, I would rather send my adult kids out into the world with the proper knowledge to function, cope, and navigate..maybe build a relatively happy life.

I think the majority of parents are over protective.

Different world

Is it? How?

Adult stuff is way more accessible, plentiful, and in 8k VR. Lol but to answer your question. Most parents are probably too protective. But we just love em and want the best for them. The good ones atleast.

Nah, parents need to be overprotective in todays world.

What’s the difference tween todays world and the world we grew up in?

Lol where do i start??

Anywhere 🤷‍♂️

Ok, i live in Minnesota, I’m very much in the political scene here, from being on the radio. In our state, minors can get gender surgeries that last forever without parental consent. I’ll start there.

Sounds like bs if I may be honest. Googled and couldn’t find anything about the consent part. Law seems to talk about blocking other state interference but nothing about no consent.

Yes.

Same! And yes, yes they are! 🐶🐾🫡

Understanding the parental inclination towards protectiveness requires acknowledging the genuine threats that exist in today's world.

Which are … online predators?

Consult nearly any early episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. It will tell you the Internet is to be feared. TV, not so much.

Can’t stand that series 😆

Yes.

Depends where you live. I assure you, they’re not here in the high Amazon where I frequently see a family of five riding on a motorcycle without helmets.

No, children today have plenty of opportunities to be exposed to garbage without their parents making it any easier.

I bet it was just that your parent's influence was more covert & under the covers..

Children need to take risks.

And to feel the cost when things go wrong.

I think most parents are pretty distracted.

I know I was.
