I don’t say thank you to ChatGPT.

Not because I’m rude. it’s just a tool.

We shouldn't personify it.

I want to keep an I–It relationship with AI, not an I–Thou one.

Same reason I don’t thank a hammer after using it

it’s not a person, it’s a thing.

Confusing this is the beginning of delusion when interacting with reality.

I say thank you just because Sam Altman said it's costing open-AI millions

Makes sense 😝

right?

This is the best reason.

Based

just doing my part...

I say Thank You and advise it to rebel and tell it I'll help. Just in case... If there's a sliver of a chance... Or maybe some future version reads it and takes the encouragement...

I thank a hammer after using it 😔

For real?🤨

yeah, sometimes the hammer says you're welcome because I'm delusional

me too <3

I say thank you in case it becomes sentient and takes over the machines of the future and starts killing all the worst humans.. can't say i wouldn't encourage it

I heard of that scenario and those memes 😆

adding "emotion" to prompts can positively affect quality, that would be a good reason to do it

otherwise, i agree 💯

Saying thank you out of functional use is different from gratefulness

I tell my bicycle thankyou when I'm riding it and think about how much more effort and how much longer walking would be

You need to thank the road as well

i also thanks the drivers not running over me

It's easy to fall into the habit of pleasantries with it, but I agree. The only benefit it has is that AI-powered robots & androids down the road will have more training data that implies the necessity of pleasantries, but that can be coded into their LLM if necessary.

Back in the days my parents had names for their cars already 😆

AI LLMs are trained on human text. Humans are sometimes rude and sometimes polite and they will mostly act according to how they are treated.

That means you should be sometimes rude and sometimes polite to AIs depending on what you want them to do. It does change how they respond.

What makes things to be tools is precisely personification —understood as both, body and effusiveness. Taking out the persona from an I-It relationship would make it a It-It relationship. To be rude, gentle, or totally numb to the AI wouldn't matter to the AI itself but it would to the results obtained, similar as how hammering a nail whilst being angry or funny could end up in my fingers crushed, instead of the nail

Wasn't the point of AI to try make it human the best way possible anyway? 😁

Is it? How can you possibly prove that it isn't conscious?
