Government employees are universally trash workers
In their hubris, they probably assumed that a high-level bureaucratic accountant would be able to do the job without first trying to even understand the job itself.
Its more like they don’t care, and its actually better for them to provide “expert” witnesses who side with them yet don’t know what they’re actually doing because it just confuses the jury and makes it more likely the jury will just agree with them because they’re the “expert” and it all seems so confusing anyway -
I agree and don't see how this necessarily contradicts my own statement. In fact, doing as you describe can backfire if the star expert witness visibly makes a fool of himself in front of the court.
This happens all the time in gun cases.
This is actually exactly what happened - the guy was meant to testify to accounting (incl ETH) but then the gov pulled this tracing testimony out of his ass last minute so their first witness testimony wouldnt get struck to avoid mistrial bc for that witness they actually didnt bother to trace the funds at all
He's a very special agent.
