Dear Bounty Hunters,

We’re exploring a new way to determine the daily winner—zaps still reign, but the number of zaps and likes would also carry weight.

Potential New Formula:

Zap Amount + (Number of Zaps × 10) + (Likes × 10) = Engagement Score

Example 1:

📹 Video A – 5,000 sats, 25 zaps, 50 likes

5,000 + (25 × 10) + (50 × 10) = 5,750 Engagement Score

Example 2:

📹 Video B – 3,000 sats, 25 zaps, 50 likes

3,000 + (25 × 10) + (50 × 10) = 3,750 Engagement Score

I think it's fine; I usually do it because I see it as a good initiative.

Perhaps I would suggest a rule limiting the possibility of winning to no more than twice a week, so that everyone has more chances. But it's just an idea.

Make it so people can play but are only able to win once or twice a week. Or just not 2 times in a row.

What a communist idea, this notion of "spreading the wealth." The incentives are aligned: whoever gets the biggest zap wins the competition.

I see no problem with someone winning consistently—at the end of the day, it's the community itself that is choosing and paying for it.

This user is punished by the community itself, and their account doesn’t grow. We’ve already seen a case where someone sent a 21k zap and got zero engagement.

I like the way it is because the incentives are aligned—zap and decentralization are the real innovations of Nostr. I see no reason to focus on likes and reposts when zap is the metric that truly matters.

Why not try number of zaps x 2 plus number of likes. That wayint incentivises engagement but not large zaps? Large zaps are welcome and the poster benefits. In the event of a tie, then the amount comes into play.

Are you saying remove zap amounts as a metric or in addition to zap amounts we multiply number of zaps x 2 and then add likes?

Remove the amount. That way it is 2 points for a zap, one for a like. So, in the unlikely event of shenanigans, large zaps are irrelevant. At the moment someone's mum could zap them 1 btc and they'd beat someone who had 10000 zaps of 21 sats. Who has done the most to spread the word? One huge zap or many smaller zaps?

Zaps definitely are a great asset to the Nostr protocol. My feeling is though that if the sat amount is more beneficial than the number of zaps, you leave yourself open to abuse. That said, it is your baby.

I like the way it was created. The idea is brilliant and highlights a unique innovation that Nostr clients brought compared to other social networks: the zap.

In the end, everything is well aligned—whoever gets the most zaps wins. Spam and similar issues are part of Nostr’s nature, and I don’t see a way to completely eliminate them. Maybe a relay with some rules could help mitigate the problem, but a definitive solution doesn’t seem feasible.

Agreed, and we appreciate this perspective. It reminds me of the Corndolrian meme with Justin Timberlake about dropping likes—Zaps are cleaner.

That said, we’re exploring ways to reward other forms of engagement while ensuring that zaps always carry the most weight.
