The first season was woke AF , did they woke it up some more?

As a fan of the games, I haven't been able to make myself watch season 2 because of the issues I've heard and seen bits of. Ellie is like a completely different character from the games. Her actor's portrayal changed some details in the first season, but she's really falling short this season. I don't think the range is there to play Ellie and it's changed the whole flow of the story.

That's far from the only issue I've seen fans upset about, but it's the biggest.

I remember the title sequence, a plausible scientific premise and the first few episodes were promising, but IMO it devolved week by week into formulaic drama with some mutant action. I rarely get past the first season of anything. Was there some non-heterosexual affection? I just want to know more about why cordyceps evolved to threaten human existence.
