#Ireland has only ever had one gold rush
General: Most of Irelandâs gold was sourced in sites most likely to have been recognised and exploited by prehistoric people collecting alluvial deposits from rivers and streams
September 1795: At Croghan Kinsella mountain a school headmaster accidently stumbles upon a loot of gold
One month later: The unregulated period of gold collection ended with a military takeover exactly one month later, on 15 October 1795. i.e. The British came in and stole it (shocker). Something i do like about the British intervention is they called the Croghan Mountain, Little Peru, which Iâm assuming has got to do with the fact most of Britains gold came Spainâs conequest of Latin America.
During the month as much as 80 kilograms of gold was recovered by prospectors.
The Woodenbridge Hotel & Lodge, Arklow was established in 1608 and here Future Taoiseach and President Ăamon de Valera and SinĂ©ad de Valera stayed at the hotel on their honeymoon in 1910
The restaurant at the hotel is named the Goldmines Bistro after the Goldmines River of the gold rush
Furthermore the story is captured in works like Peadar McArdle's Gold Frenzy. It is a vivid chapter of Irish history, blending greed, hope, and the elusive promise of riches in the Wicklow Hills.

We civilised the world with Guinness and abolished people who are shite craic
The left will never understand this
Insightful
Democracy is the silly idea that just because everyone else wants something, you should want it too.

âWith every penny spent the consumers determine the direction of all production processes and the details of the organization of all business activities. This state of affairs has been described by calling the market a democracy in which every penny gives a right to cast a ballot. 12 It would be more correct to say that a democratic constitution is a scheme to assign to the citizens in the conduct of government the same supremacy the market economy gives them in their capacity as consumers. However, the comparison is imperfect. In the political democracy only the votes cast for the majority candidate or the majority plan are effective in shaping the course of affairs. The votes polled by the minority do not directly influence policies. But on the market no vote is cast in vain. Every penny spent has the power to work upon the production processes. The publishers cater not only to the majority by publishing detective stories, but also to the minority reading lyrical poetry and philosophical tracts. The bakeries bake bread not only for healthy people, but also for the sick on special diets. The decision of a consumer is carried into effect with the full momentum he gives it through his readiness to spend a definite amount of money.â

Ireland has changed massively. It use to bother me more than I did but having lived abroad for a short stint, the problems here are everywhere if not worse, sadly
It is for sure
It shouldnât be because itâs not that hard to be neutral but here we are
Unknown stories about #Ireland
During WW2 a group of Nazi pilots crashed landed in Ireland County Kerry.
Given Irelands neutrality they were not taken in as prisoners of but interned there. They were having such a good time, many did not want to leave. Free dinners, cheap beer, loads of Cecil dances, Irish women and free bus trips to Dublin! They were happy out! And when any soldier kicked up a fuss, they were sure to be put back in their place by their fellow comrades.
Thereâs photos of them dancing at Ceilis and enjoying a snug pint of Guinness in families headed by a bean an tĂ (traditional Irish women of the house)
See âLuftwaffe Eagles Over Ireland: The Story of German Air Crashes Over Neutral Ireland 1940-1945â goes through it in immense detail and discusses other planes that landed. Contains an amazing set of photos.
Below I quote a review of the book
âThe camp was more like a holiday camp than a prisoner-of-war camp, because they had great freedom of movement. Within the camp they were allowed to have their own radios and phonographs. They even had bars run by the camp authorities in each of the compounds, where they could buy beer and spirits at duty-free prices.
At the end of the war, most of the German internees wished to remain in Ireland longer. Four Austrians were given political asylum, but the remainder were compelled to return home, including the four German airmen who married Irish girls they met while interned here.
Those German survivors retained fond memories of their time in Ireland, unlike their Allied counterparts, who tended to resent their internment. When I was writing Guests of the State about the internment of the Allied and German servicemen, the Allied airmen explained that they were very frustrated in the Curragh and resented the suggestion that the camp was more like a holiday camp than a concentration camp.â
