Well, a couple of weeks ago I posted a link to a video by The Critical Drinker that nailed it. Contrasting the qualities of well-written female heroes with their poorly-written, paper-thin counterparts.

But I know the Drinker isn't for everyone and fair enough. He can be pretty abrasive. So here's another video that covers the same ground, with the rough edges sanded off.

'Audiences Hate Bad Writing, Not Strong Women'

Enjoy.

Leeloo from The Fifth Element. Two, Five, and Female Data from Dark Matter. Every female character in Game of Thrones. I could keeping spewing examples all day, but you get the point.

So for a long time, I was struggling to put my finger on why I was so unimpressed by characters like Rey from The Force Awakens, Tauriel in the bloated, cartoonish Hobbit trilogy, or the sad caricature of Galadriel in the epic turd that is Rings of Power.

(3/?)

More recently, Olivia Denholm in Fringe. Nagata, Drummer and Draper from The Expanse. Karen Voss from Humans. The Clone Club from Orphan Black. Silk Spectre from the Watchmen movie. Hit Girl from Kick-Ass. Black Widow, Gamora, and Kate Bishop from the MCU. Gal Godot's 2017 take on Wonder Woman. Louise Banks from Arrival. Evelyn from Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul. Eleven from Stranger Things. Prairie from The OA. Dolores and Maeve from Westworld.

(2/?)

I've always enjoyed movies and TV shows with female heroes. Princess Leia from Star Wars. Janna, Kelly, and Su-Lin from Blake's 7. Marion from Robin of Sherwood. Ripley and Vasquez from Aliens. Sarah Connor from Terminator (1 as much as 2). Anne Lewis from RoboCop. Melina from Total Recall. Trinity from The Matrix. All the smart, compassionate and - when required - arse-kicking female leads in 90s Star Trek, Farscape, and Firefly. Dana Scully in The X Files. Even Dr Quinn Medicine Woman.

Hipkins slamming the NatACTS for proposing tax cuts that mostly benefit the wealthy... while ruling out desperately needed wealth taxes - morally equivalent to tax cuts - is rank hypocrisy. Hopefully the anti-NatACT public respond by shifting their votes from Labour to the Greens, Te Pāti Māori, and TOP. All of whom support making making the wealthy pay their fair share of tax.

I've never been more proud to be from Aotearoa than when I saw a huge crowd of metal fans, from all around the world, going crazy to Alien Weaponry at Wacken. Their music is a glorious expression of both their whakapapa Māori and their European ancestry. The music video for Raupatu is right up there with the video to Right in Two by Tool, as one of the most deeply affecting piece of audio-visual art I've ever seen:

> Australia to make social media platforms accountable for the spread of disinformation

As with the link tax stuff, I can see why that's appealing. But with beware regulatory capture.

With any tech regulation like this, key questions to ask are a) how would this affect people running fediverse instances, and b) would it shift the power differential between them and the DataFarms in the right direction?

Here's a good example

"[DIA] has today released a discussion document for consultation which aims to make it less common for people to see harmful and illegal content."

Hamish Cardwell, 2023

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/491136/consultation-opens-on-proposals-to-make-online-spaces-safer

Sounds reasonable, right? But what if NORML and other drug law reform groups had their own fedi instances? Or any activist group that sometimes engages in Direct Action that's technically illegal to fight much greater wrongs (drug prohibition, carbon emissions etc).

> It sends an awful message when we spend more time trying to get bigots back on our side than we do the people they are bigoted against

Only to people who can't see their way out of false dichotomies. No one is a more passionate anti-smoking advocate than an ex-smoker. Similarly, ex-fascists are an incredibly powerful force for turning fascists into antifascists. What better way to help protect anyone they're bigoted against (which is everyone but themselves BTW).

> you have to realize that you probably had an easier time doing that due to your proximity than a rando on the internet would have

This is a very good point. It's worth pointing out that all this happened before anyone involved knew the net existed (although I think some of them had used a BBS). But my point that it's possible *and* more effective than the 'punch a fascist' approach. Which feeds their sense of victimhood and probably helps them with recruiting.

I think you've either missed my point, or confused me with someone else you've argued about this with.

Maybe try reading to understand, rather than reading to condemn?

Cool. Has the Swarms feature improved the reliability of message delivery? I last tested it pre-2020, but back then it was dropping messages so much it was impractical to use for text conversations. The voice conferencing was pretty impressive back then though, especially for a P2P app!

> I'd rather have regulatory capture by a government I mostly trust than unregulated cesspits of hate

The phrase "regulatory capture" describes a situation where the corporations targeted by a regulation take control of the regulatory process, and misuse it to knobble smaller competitors with untargeted or mis-targeted regulations and high compliance costs, and thus entrench their disproportionate market power.

Again, nostr:npub1hykucplphuhelaxutcw4jw3vuu7gcg42czhqmk7jhchs8vdga4fsj73p33 has written a good piece on regulatory capture, particularly as it applies to the digital tech industry:

https://craphound.com/news/2022/06/12/regulatory-capture-beyond-revolving-doors-and-against-regulatory-nihilism/

I know I'm referencing him a lot, but it saves me the trouble of writing my own blog post to restate the same points, less articulately ; )

Another important question to ask about new regulations proposed for social media, in particular; how would I feel about this if was a proposal to regulate news media? It's important not to let our antipathy to the DataFarms blind us to the fact that broad brush social media regulation could apply to SubStack and Medium as well as FB and Titter. Potentially even to HitGub and other non-obvious platforms, depending how the regulation is targeted.

One more question I find useful, after 2 years living behind the Great Firewall; how would I feel about the proposed regulation if the CCP was imposing it as a condition of making online services accessible to the Chinese population.

"Last year we introduced swarms for one-to-one conversations. Since then, it allows users to synchronize a conversation across all their devices. However, this is only a small part Swarms allow us to do. The main goal of this technology is to allow us to have conversations with multiple participants.

For some months now, we are slowly making conversations with small groups (8 people) available on all platforms..."

Like the NZ Harmful Digital Censorship Act, I suspect this proposal might look a lot less favourable in the light of such an analysis. The devil is in the details, I guess.

Any good proposals for how to fix this?
