Free human being of this Earth. Pākeha in Aotearoa. Be excellent to each other! Technically speaking, I'm a straight, white man.

But I also have dark hair, dark eyes, and a fairly swarthy complexion (from a great-grandfather with Mediterranean heritage). Māori people always seem to know I'm Pākeha, but Pākeha often think I'm Māori. So I've had experiences like being hassled by Pākeha cops for Walking While (appearing) Black, followed around shops by Pākeha store detectives, whose implicit bias suggests I'm more likely to steal.

Technically speaking, I'm a straight, white man.

But during my childhood and teenage years I endured being called names like "fag", because my interests align more with those of the stereotypical gay man. Enjoying singing and theatre but not sport. Dressing flamboyantly. Having lots of close female friends (*not* to get in their pants or help make friends do so).

I may not be a homosexual, but that doesn't mean I have no lived experience that allows me to identify with their struggles.

The UNIX greyhair who taught me the like Docker I know compared them to something he called "BSD jails".

> It seems nowhere is safe from stupid xenophobia right now

Aotearoa is reasonably free of it, despite the attempts by the news media and various factions of the NGO-industrial complex to whip up fear of a White Supremacy bogeyman. Yes, there is a rump of white supremacists (the tattooed bonehead variety) and respectable racists (eg Hobson's Pledge, Stop Co-Governance). But for the most part, the majority of the country looks at them with barely disguised horror.

> Sounds like it could be potentially depressing, as he's highlighting a lot of lousy things in our world today

Quite the opposite. In fact, I think the podcast is better than reading the same articles in this respect. The sardonic, mocking tone he uses to talk about DataFarmers and incompetent regulators is amusing, not depressing, and he always focuses on solutions and what we can do, not just the problems.

According to the creator of Mastodon, the first developer to implement ActivityPub;

"A server you are not signed up with and logged into cannot get your private data or track you across the web. What it can get are your public profile and public posts, which are publicly accessible."

parody

I enjoyed those films, as a homage though, clearly not as canon. Kind of like those hammy Doctor Who movies with Peter Cushing.

> It was mostly anti-government actually

You're getting confused between my speculative fiction PR campaign set in the noughties (ie 2000-2010), and the historical PR campaign created to turn as many people from the 1960s-70s counterculture as possible into neo-reactionaries obsessed with "small government" (ie socialism for the rich).

The one where I get clobbered for getting wise to what they're up to? Ah, but you see I cleverly inoculated readers against that, by pointing out that if they do it, they're the Useful Idiots described by the fictional PR guru : P

That's neat. How long ago were you there?

According to one travel vlogger laowhy86, Chinese sentiment towards foreigners has taken a very sharp dive in recent years, although I don't know enough about China to know whether he's speaking genuinely from experience, of if he's just got an axe to grind.

> How long ago were you there?

I lived there for a couple of years, just before the pandemic started.

> Chinese sentiment towards foreigners has taken a very sharp dive in recent years

That's what I heard too, from friends who were still there through 2020-22. I'm not currently in contact with anyone I knew there who's still there. A situation I'd like to rectify if possible.

As with everything, it's a balancing act, and you have to evaluate how well an image maintainer keeps up with security update (and not just updates to their application), the threat level of that particular server, etc.

I just personally *never* hear people discussing that when they discuss using images. They talk about it like it's just another installation avenue like flatpak. :/

> They talk about it like it's just another installation avenue like flatpak

That's actually a very good comparison. Docker is kind of like FlatPak for servers. Although maybe more like AppImage.

As long as you have the latest image, you have the latest version of everything packaged inside it. Like any package manager, this can be automated. Everything else is handled by the OS, not Docker or the Container. That's my understanding, having only tinkered with Docker a little.

Indymedia or the origins of the fediverse?

Replying to fe4725c2...

because of an open letter signed by 50 imprisioned women that was sent to us today by a family member for sharing...

i want to reflect further on how hard is to get messages trough

they wrote it by hand, then sent it to a contact i assume by letter, the i got an instagram message and got the pdf after and transcribed it. the news will be out soon, but i want to reflect on something else related to this

bc i want people to post their own content online in a way, i think people should be able to tell stories how they want to

i was thinking on what the best app may be overall and...

#tumblr is really ok for posting content

but it doesnt allow for #sound uploads :(((( at least, on mobile... but it has rss! and broader size limits than any fediverse instances i know about...

my thing is, why is it so hard to publish multimedia content online?

i know servers cost a lot, and thats why mastodon is so restricted with this.

but why cant we just post any kind of content? like sound, text, pdf archives, video, links and fotos is the basic. most social media allowo only one at a time. its so fristrating. especially trying to do grassroots journalism with activists. its impossible to get them to publish content in any way thats #open, has an rss feed and is readable by other #socials. meaning, everyone is on facebook getting 1 like each. i cant sleep.

like this may seem non poetical but really, we dont solve the technical side then we are stuck forever in empty echo chambers

we need astral rss and federation to be able to even start to compete with major media. its on us to federate everything, no matter the cost. we need to reach people somehow, enter through their phones and get these messages through, and make them forget the tv.

i really like

https://vozesdedentro.noblogs.org

thei're a support group for people who have been jailed and help them get their letters through.

i've syndicated their blog to our own news portal, and its now being re-re-shared on anrachist federation which to me is already a really good situation. an example of how i think rss is really cool

All the raw materials are lying around for what you need. What's lacking is an organised project to slice and dice the software, and cook it together into a smooth HX (Human eXperience). Like the first Indymedia site did.

But Strange New Worlds is presented as a canon Star Trek show. Season 1 set itself up to be taken seriously, especially with events like the encounter with the Gorn and death of Hemmer. Or Pike's discovery of his fate in the final episode. For it now to turn itself into an Orville-like parody of itself is jarring, and disappointing. I hear I have a Scrubs-style musical episode to look forward to, on top of this one. Yay.

To be clear, I'm not against people making parodies or fan-fics of Star Trek, as long as they're not passing themselves off *as* Star Trek. If I want to watch a parody, I'll watch The Orville, or Space Quest, which are hilarious. Or I could watch Lower Decks, although I don't due to the first episode being cringeworthy drivel.

There's plenty of great fan-fic too, like the Star Trek Continues series, which is better than some of the sloppier episodes of ST:TOS itself.

Finally caught up with Strange New Worlds s02e07 (yes, I'm a bit behind). I can't deny I enjoyed watching this, it was funny, and occasionally wise. Kind of like The Orville. In fact, almost exactly like the Orville, and therein lies the problem. It was parody, and worse, it was fan-fic presented in the real bottle.
