So tonight, I got one episode closer to catching up with #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds. Episode s02e08 definitely rewarded my persistence. A challenging, morally complicated story, that gives us a deeper look into a number of the crew, their shared histories, the traumas they nurse, or bury, the practical philosophies that get each of them through the day. What more can I say? Classic Trek.
More of this please, and much less of the crew from the Lower Decks popping in for a frat party ; )
The Left is not a political tradition where we call for bosses to just fire people... like they're the star on a certain former President's TV show.
This post, and the thread it kicked off, shows quite clearly that the moral crusading crypto-conservatives who pass themselves off as "liberals" are definitely not part of the left:

Don't feel bad, it's hard not to. However low you set your expectations, they somehow find a way to limbo under them.

> I spend around $40 a week on fruit and veges. Gst off would be great
You're assuming that the supermarkets wouldn't just pocket the difference and say "thanks for the subsidy Labour". Because they would, and Labour know it. This is a desperate attempt to curry favour with corporate welfare. All while spinning it as left-wing policy that will benefit workers.
For that, you need to look to TPM, TOP, the Greens, hell even Winston First. Not Labour.

Me:
> So liberal "centre-left" parties cut transformative policies and dog whistle at people influenced by right-wing populism. So their support goes down in the polls.

You got any good links on EARN IT? Or any other proposed laws targeting encryption?
I'm planning a blog posts giving an overview of all the laws, and proposed laws, that could impact the developers and instance operators of decentralised comms software using encryption (XMPP+OMEMO, matrix, and potentially in the future, the verse).

The fediverse is currently made up mostly of Missing Stairs. The HX (Human experience) for newbies is frequently bewildering. We, the devs and veterans who have encouraged people to escape here from the DataFarms, need to fix all these Missing Stairs. Before people start to break their legs.
I'm speaking metaphorically of course. But social software that's confusing - especially when its interfaces makes implicit privacy or "reach" promises they can't keep - can lead to real harm.

I wrote to Andrew Little about it at the time. Haven't heard much since.
We need to talk a lot to the "internet safety" folks, and make sure they understand the technical impossibility of encryption that protects the communications of vulnerable minorities, *and* has backdoors for the cops etc. Otherwise they'll likely be weaponised with "think of the children!" style arguments.

Dunbar was an anthropologist, not a neuroanatomy researcher, and Dunbar's Number was an ethnographical observation, not a biological one.
"Your social life has a biological limit: 150. That’s the number—Dunbar’s number, proposed by the British psychologist Robin Dunbar three decades ago—of people with whom you can have meaningful relationships."
#IanBogost, 2021
That's your opening? Not off too a great start there Ian.

Links please? Sounds like there's misinformation in those that needs correcting too.

I'm simply correcting the misinformation you're spreading. As for the rest of this wailing and gnashing of teeth, in the immortal words of the Bard;
"It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."

Identity is complicated and mulit-faceted. It's dynamic, ever-changing. We contain multitudes, every one of us. Presuming to know the limitations of other people's life experience, based on visible identity markers, is the *opposite* of "progressive".

I didn't always identify as a "man". To the point where I'd be juggling in a public place and a mum would say to their kids "look at that man juggling", and I'd literally look around to see who they meant. It took me a long time to find role models for positive masculinity, which allowed me to feel comfortable identifying as a man.
I may not be non-binary or gender-fluid, but that doesn't mean I have no lived experience I can use to identify with their struggles.

I have dark hair, dark eyes, and a fairly swarthy complexion (via a great-grandfather from the Mediterranean). Māori people always seem to know I'm Pākeha, but Pākeha often think I'm Māori. For example, I've been hassled by Pākeha cops for Walking While (appearing) Black, followed around shops by Pākeha store detectives, whose implicit bias suggests I'm more likely to steal.
I may not be Māori, but that doesn't mean I have no lived experience I can use to identify with their struggles.
