> to the average Chinese citizen it probably seems like a positive change
So as long as the CCP seems to improving their standard of living, they get on with their own jobs, and trust the CCP to get on with the governing. In my 2 years living there I noticed that Chinese people place a very high value on social harmony. We knew one person who constantly badmouthed anti-CCP (and praised Agent Orange, go figure), but she was still in favour of the Social Credit system 🤷♂️

... any number of things. Including a street food vendor. I noticed a lot of cracking down on them around the uni campus where I lived in China. Beggars weren't very common though, at least not in the parts of China I spent time in (mainly the Pacific Coast between Shanghai and Hong Kong). I really only saw them during holiday seasons.

> The banks lost access to billions in transaction fees per year and they lost the metadata on each transaction.
... and TenCent and AliBaba got it all instead, and the CCP of course has an open backdoor into their systems, as a condition of letting them stay in business in China. So they have all that metadata too.
> the iron fist slapping down the banks who were getting too powerful and also manipulating their Big Tech into doing their bidding
Only the CCP can do that!

"My sense that a physical fight might break out ebbed and flowed over the course of the confrontation, which took nearly an hour. There were several threats to ‘take things outside,’ but the librarians’ calm and resolve never wavered. Eventually, everyone either left, or returned to their own activities.
I didn’t understand every detail of the conflict, but one thing was clear: I had just witnessed a masterful show of de-escalation."

> to compete with the bank
Well, not exactly. From what I remember, you have to connect both apps to a bank account to use them. Imagine an internet banking app you can use with any bank account, from any bank. If it wasn't for the fact that in this case they're proprietary apps owned by a corporate DataFarm (TenCent is the Meta of China, AliBaba is the AmaSin), that would be something I'd actually want in Aotearoa!

OK, so for now, vapourware ; )
As an amateur musician who's done a lot of busking, I very much appreciate cash.
Also as someone who's bought a lot of substances that have been demonised and criminalised, despite being relatively harmless (compared to alcohol or tobacco).

> Cult of the Dead Cow Wants to Save Internet Privacy with a New Encryption Protocol
I'm intrigued to learn more details about what the terminal bovines are proposing. From the scraps of information in that Gizmodo article, I learn the names of the protocol and application Veilid(Chat), and that it's
"open-source, peer-to-peer, mobile-first". So far it sounds roughly like Scuttlebutt, Nostr or Session. Is it going to be interoperable with anything but itself?
