> They are also terrible for ADHD because they so so ephemeral
Good point. I find notifications incredibly handing for assisting my ADHD coping mechanisms. But to make this work, whenever I get a new device I put a lot of effort into the learning how to control the various layers of the notifications systems. I also replace all the default stuff with apps from F-Droid that allow me to manage notifications in way that work for me.

> ive no idea what they are planning
What Grant - and the NatActs - are planning is Public-Private Partnerships. In other words, partial privatisation, like what the last NatACT govt did to the power companies. Have power prices got any cheaper since then? Not noticeably. Have profits increased for capitalists with shares in our power infrastructure? Hell yes.

As a phrase, Open Access refers specifically to academic publication. What other contexts have you seen it used in?

Yes, this is the goal of all Regulatory Capture. I capitalised to to indicate that it's a phrase with a specific technical meaning in political-economic discussions. See:

> DC has obviously had some successes in individual movies, but their attempt at a universe seems to have sputtered into a 5 second one-liner
Ae, it's kind of the opposite of the MCU. A smorgasbord of lame prequel-itis, with the odd gem (eg Wonder Woman, Doom Patrol, The Suicide Squad). I'm hopeful that James Gunn might manage to whip the DCU into shape, in which case maybe I will keep going to see the odd superhero movie at the cinema.

> nothing really came out of those discussions
That seems like a missed opportunity, what happened? Did the communication just tail off? Or was there some mismatch of project goals or something?

> the band is bloodywood and they've got some good tracks
They sure do. I listened to some more tonight. In a strange way it reminds me of Alien Weaponry. They have a similar style of metal playing, and a similar sensibility when it comes to putting in traditional instruments and vocal styles, just enough, not too much. The Hu get that balance right too.
I'm starting to wonder how much influence Sepultura had on all this with the Roots album.

> their name "Shihad" is from the accented pronunciation of "jihad" from the 1984 movie Dune
Huh. Who knew? (Well you obviously... ; )
But you know what ...
If I was in a band that was actually called Jihad, I would have firmly refused to change our name for post-911 tours to the US.
The reason hotheads in the Middle East were calling for a jihad, is that the US military, CIA etc had been interfering with their politics and murdering their people for decades. See the Adam Curtis doco series The Power of Nightmares, about the origins of "Al Qaeda". Post-911 they got busy killing civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq, etc, for decades more.
The US public - who pay for that military - have something to feel embarrassed by. My band wouldn't have, and neither did Sihad.

#Listening to Funky Smell From Your Mouth by jazz funk bass legend Juna Serita and her band:

Gotta love the quirky names Japanese musicians give their songs in English sometimes : P
Serita's playing reminds me in some ways of a young Les Claypool. She's got incredible chops! I'd love to see her branch out into more of a funk metal style a la Primus or Infectious Grooves. If she already has, please link me!

There's something I can't help but notice about the videos of Juna Serita and her various groups.
In visual media, there's a thing called the Rule of Thirds. Basically, if you put a 9 box grid over an image (like a Noughts and Crosses board), whatever is at the intersection of the grid lines will draw the eye, see:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds
There are many attractive young women in Serita's bands, often in snug-fitting dresses. I'll give you three guess what's usually in the Thirds...

I love the ways the vocalists use their voices as percussions instruments, as well as making use of a wide range of singing styles, both traditional and contemporary. Highly entertaining.

Notifications are a PITA, especially on mobile. One reason is that there can be so many different layers of them (contact, app, OS, hardware, network etc), all controlled in different Settings/ Preferences control panels, accessed in different places. I have a HX (Human eXperience) suggestion for mobile OS designers on one way to reduce this frustration.
