> the "CW everything" approach (which may not have ever been that popular

Ae, it's never been standard practice in all my years here (about a decade's worth). I'm sympathetic to the CW thing, but TBH I seldom use them myself. I don't tend to post a lot of the stuff people want them on (eye contact, food, traumatic stories etc). People who need them on politics and stuff like that won't follow me, and that's OK.

> I haven't seen a CW-scold in a while now. That's good

Again, just to make sure I'm understanding you, are you saying;

a) people have stopped advocating for CWs,

OR

b) that they're become gentler in doing so, and maybe more effective, so it's less noticeable and there's less of it to notice?

Yet more encouragement to update the OS on my PinePhone and start using it...

I've also noticed this at times with OSMAnd+ on Android. Especially when using it to navigate while in a motor vehicle, as opposed to on foot or bike.

What I find intriguing is that I seem to get as much done in a focused 25min burst - with the promise of a 5min break - as I'd get done in an hour otherwise. Whether that productivity boost is real or imagined, I find it highly motivating ; )

> the combination of capitalism and a rigid rationalist/mechanical sense of human behavior makes a terrrrible primordial soup

I read nostr:npub1q2u2afqm22e4k9kt4rxvl205pks6zmxuwq5dkuzgc6g8rp3x6cqqevtv7q comment as saying that these are two faces of one coin, and this inherent to each other. Rigid rationalism produces capitalism which reinforces the rigidity of rationalism... leading to Capitalist Realism (ie the ideology that capitalism is the only rational system). It's an ouroboros and we're all stuck in its festering guts...

Replying to da073fa5...

nostr:npub1qmcpm5qnud8p4az4enwx0arcnw38jxyq70yzphj5xdn9va6q8s4qryv6gx There's huge value in "done" vs. perfect. I may whinge a lot about the rough corners of Masto, but it's still better than something that never got done.

I'm trying to decide if Mastodon is interesting like a modernist new town, idealism that hasn't quite adapted to the reality of humans, and if so whether that makes it an interesting failure, or whether good opportunities really remain (hope the latter).

I'm slowly working through "Seeing Like A State" and looking for parallels...

Just out of curiosity, which of 3 possible uses of Mastodon do you mean here?

a) The default web app people see when they use a server

b) The whole product, that app+back-end

c) The fediverse as a network.

Do your comments also apply also to servers running other ActivityPub software like Akkoma, PixelFed, PeerTube, GoToSocial, or FireFish? Or just Mastodon?

> How long have you been using pomodoro?

As of today 😅

But I have used it in the past when sharing work space with someone else who was trying it out. I find it quite effective when I can remember to do it. But the timer is key.

I just installed a GTK pomodoro app for my GNU/Linux OS.

It's like having an egg timer, but I don't need to manually switch it between the 25min work session and the 5min rest time. It switches between the two automatically, and gives me a desktop notification when each timer runs out.

I love it!

> also true and one of the things that makes Luke as a hero so enduring and across many cultures

Agreed. As a story point, Vader's implicit threat to Leia also illustrates one of the final desperate tricks the dark side starts to use, as we learn to see and resist its pull. Appealing to the egotistical part of us that wants to be the White Knight for the innocent in distress, and will justify using any means necessary in pursuit of this, no matter how dark.

"You will find no answers in this head

What you see is what you get

Watch as all the lights go out

Down and out, out for the count

Take your places, choose your sins

Everyone loses, no one wins

I have seen the future

And this is how it begins

In chaos and riots, the screech of machines

No right and no wrong, and no in-between

Fall one by one, the queen to her fool

Dos dedos mis amigos, everything's cool"

I'm pretty sure that if the fediverse had a theme song, it would be something very like Keep Us Connected, Uhura's solo from Subspace Rhapsody, the musical episode of Strange New Worlds;

"My fabric is woven

With love and loss

...I absorb all the pain,

I hear everyone's voice calling my name

Building systems, I strengthen ties that bind

So no one has to be alone"

Certain forms of theft and violent crime have been running rampant in NZ. In other news...

Shock, horror! When you put 20 rats in a cage with only enough space and food for 10, they'll fight and steal from each other in an attempt to survive. But new research reveals, this is not a consequence of "rat nature", and can't be blamed entirely on the behaviour of a minority of "bad apples" among the group of rats.

> avatar in a social media sense (small picture)

Yeah that one. But if there is an observable effect here, I imagine it applies even more so to VR avatars. Which has some intriguing implications...

So there's the skeleton of a narrative and some character arcs. As for the muscles and costume, so many possibilities!

What if we take all that time wasted on the starcrossed lover thing, and spend it with Hancock on his bender. What if he doesn't just drink? What would a coked up superhero do? What would happen to a tripping superhero?

What other kinds of half-arsed rescues and crime prevention could he blunder through, digging himself deeper into the hole he's in when he meets Ray?

(11/?)

As for the ending, Hancock somehow painting Ray's generic heart logo on the moon 🤦‍♂️

What Ray's trying to do with his social enterprise isn't working because it's dopey. He breaks the golden rule of PR; know your audience (see Thank You For Smoking). Corporate CEOs have no incentive to give stuff away, however good the cause.

I can imagine the execs deciding to exploit Ray's friendship with Hancock to exploit him for marketing purposes (a la The Boys) and Ray starting to go along with it.

(9/?)

Apparently the original script was more about the relationship between Hancock and Ray's son Aaron, who idolizes the superhero despite his flaws. There's plenty of room there for great character arcs too.

Along similar lines, Hancock has power but no passion. Aaron has passion, but no power. By becoming surrogate uncle and newphew, Hancock and Aaron both learn something important about being a man, and that caring for someone other than ourselves is what it really means to be a hero.

(5/?)

Disclaimer: Despite the length of time I've been using matrix, I'm still learning new stuff all the time. It's not impossible I've got this totally wrong. If so, please *let me know*! So I can correct it, and stop inadvertantly spreading technical fake news.

The Trailer Park Boys gives us their feline-themed spin on the classically meme-worthy sea shanty, the Wellerman:

TBH I'm not a huge fan of the artfully cringe-inducing style of humour of TPB. This this little sea shanty is fun.
