Today you have a large selection of handguns for personal defense. Many US States have constitutional carry. No permit needed to carry a concealed handgun.
I strongly recommend competent training in but the weapon of the choice and the grave responsibilities that come with firearm ownership. You are responsible for every projectile you fire. I can not stress this enough.
Many states require a permit issued by your resident state. This reciprocity is a big deal when you cross state lines.
