remember when trace mayer got himself canceled and then disappeared and was never seen again? he's probably out there living his best life. what a genius. odell's note about the industry being brutal made me think of that for some reason.

I often think about what happened to him. He was such a proponent of Bitcoin, but whatever happened to him? Wasn't he promoting some coin at one of the Bitcoin events and then shortly after disappeared?

I'm using Zeus with a self hosted node and the only complain I have is the slow tor connection time. But you do have to get your hands dirty. I just like having Zeus not hiding anything, but it's definitely not beginner friendly.

i guess it depends on what you're looking to get out of it. there's a ton that you learn by running your own node, especially if you're trying to make it sustainable through routing fees. however, a very small number of people are actually able to do so. it ends up just being a test in how much time and sats you're willing to lose until you decide to just run your own node for taking or spending sats, not to make money through routing fees.

I like your reasoning! Thanks for sharing! My goal is to open channels and at least recoup the cost of opening channels and not trying to make it through routing fees.

Install it using raspibolt or minibolt it will be much easier the solve the problems when they occur. Umbrel and start9 are easy to install, but very complex to debug and solve problems. Install lightning terminal for autopilot fees management and custodial accounts for family and frens.

3. I prefer to just open my own unnanounced channels to big well connected nodes like ACINQ and Olympus and then get inbound liquidity by spending (e.g. selling on robosats) or looping-out using loopd from Lightning Labs.

4. Defaults are good

Have you recouped your initial channel opening fees? A sat saved is a sat earned.
