ON THIS DATE (54 YEARS AGO)

November 16, 1970 – Grand Funk Railroad: Live Album is released.

https://youtu.be/klFxsIEaI48

Live Album is the first live album by Grand Funk Railroad, released on November 16, 1970. It reached #5 on the Billboard 200 Top LPs & Tapes chart.

The album's cover depicts a photograph of the band at the Atlanta International Pop Festival during the weekend of the 4th of July 1970, but none of the music was actually recorded there. It was recorded at the Jacksonville Coliseum on June 23, 1970 with the exception of "Paranoid" and "Inside Looking Out" which were recorded at the West Palm Beach Civic Auditorium on June 24, 1970. "Heartbreaker" is listed as being recorded at 'either Jacksonville or West Palm Beach'.

CAPITOL SHIPS 1 MIL FUNK LPs

HOLLYWOOD-Capitol Records will ship the largest pre-ordered amount of any one product in recent company history on Nov. 16 with the release of the new Grand Funk Railroad "Live Album," announces Don England, VP, Marketing.

“The 750,000 albums and 250,000 tapes is the largest initial number of any one Capitol product pre-ordered since the phenomenal sales trend of the Beatles was set in the mid-'60s," England said.

A great asset for all, especially the consumer, is the price factor of this two -record set which carries a suggested retail price of $5.98,” England reported. “Not only is the record itself long by normal standards with one hour and 20 minutes of music, but the jacket carries a full-color inside spread plus a large, full-color souvenir poster of the group included free inside every album.

This special suggested retail price has been carried over into the tape configurations as well with a two-cassette package in a special binder carrying asuggested retail price of $7.98. The eight-track cartridge has been assembled to give the buyer the full playing time of the album on one cartridge instead of the usual 40 minutes or so. It, too, will carry the one-dollar-more theme with a suggested retail price of $7.98.

“The special low price for such a prestigious package has been made possible through the joint efforts and cooperation of Capitol and the individual members of Grand Funk Railroad and their manager-producer, Terry Knight,”England said.

"Live Album," of course, qualifies for immediate RIAA certification for gold record million-seller status. It marks the fourth gold album in as many releases for the Capitol trio.

-THE ISLAND LIFE-

Paolo and Virgínia, by Italian artist Alessandro Putinati, completed in 1844. It depicts the characters from the eponymous novel written by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre in 1787.

The work tells the story of two children living on the island of Mauritius, members of different families but raised as brother and sister. Over time, their bond develops into a passionate love, causing concern for Virginia's mother, who sends her away to France.

Putinati’s sculpture captures the moment when Paulo, overwhelmed with emotion, declares his love for the young woman. Years later, Virginia decides to return to the island, but the ship carrying her sinks against the rocks, right before Paulo’s disbelieving eyes. Consumed by grief, the young man dies of sorrow. The sculpture is currently in a private collection.

The Castello di Roccascalegna is a defensive structure located in the town of Roccascalegna, in the province of Chieti, Italy. Perched on top of a rocky outcrop, overlooking the town, it has ancient origins and underwent various additions between the 16th and 17th centuries.

A legend associated with the castle involves the enforcement of the so-called "Ius primae noctis" law: according to this legend, in 1646, the castle's baron, Corvo de Corvis, attempted to apply this law, which required all the women in the village to spend their wedding night with him instead of their newlywed husbands.

It is said that the last bride, or the legitimate husband disguised in her attire, ascended to the castle for the planned consummation and ended up stabbing the baron. As he died, he left a bloodied handprint on a rock.

"Nasir Al-Mulk Mosque"

The mosque has many different names. It is commonly known as the "Pink Mosque", but is also called the "Colorful Mosque", "Rainbow Mosque" or "Kaleidoscope Mosque". It is a space where light and prayer intertwine.

The mosque comes to life at sunrise, and the colors dance around like whirling dervishes throughout the day, reflecting on the floor, walls, arches and rising towers. It gives visitors the impression that the first light of day has hit a colored ball, sending thousands of butterflies flying everywhere.

-THE ISLAND LIFE-

William S. Burroughs, a pivotal figure in 20th-century literature, is renowned for his innovative writing style and exploration of unconventional themes. Born on February 5, 1914, in St. Louis, Missouri, Burroughs came from a privileged background, yet his life was marked by a profound sense of alienation and rebellion against societal norms. His early experiences, including his family's connections to the pharmaceutical industry, would later influence his most famous work, "Naked Lunch," published in 1959.

Burroughs attended Harvard University, where he studied literature and anthropology. After graduating in 1936, he pursued various odd jobs while immersing himself in the vibrant cultural landscape of the time, including the avant-garde art scene. His life took a pivotal turn in the late 1940s when he became involved with the Beat Generation, a literary and cultural movement that challenged traditional values and sought new forms of expression. Alongside contemporaries like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, Burroughs explored themes of sexuality, drug addiction, and existentialism, often using experimental narrative techniques.

The quote, "Whenever you are threatened by a hostile presence...emit a thick cloud of love like an octopus squirts out ink," encapsulates Burroughs' unique worldview. His analogy of emitting love to counter hostility reflects his belief in the transformative power of compassion, an idea that resonates throughout his work. This perspective emerged from his experiences with addiction and the tumultuous relationships he navigated throughout his life.

Burroughs' most influential work, "Naked Lunch," is a nonlinear narrative that defies conventional storytelling. It explores the fragmented realities of addiction, sexuality, and power, often drawing on Burroughs' own struggles with heroin addiction. The book was initially banned for obscenity, but its eventual publication marked a significant moment in literary history, challenging censorship and paving the way for more open discussions about taboo subjects in literature. "Naked Lunch" exemplified Burroughs' innovative style, incorporating cut-up techniques and disjointed narratives that mirrored the chaos of modern life.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Burroughs continued to experiment with language and form. He became involved in the counterculture movement, embracing new ideas and exploring the intersections of art and politics. His works from this period, such as "The Ticket That Exploded" (1962) and "The Wild Boys" (1971), further pushed the boundaries of narrative and style, reflecting the tumultuous social landscape of the time. Burroughs' writings often delved into the nature of control, addiction, and the struggle for personal freedom, resonating with the ideals of the era.

Burroughs' fascination with technology and its impact on society also emerged in his later works. He became increasingly interested in the ways in which media and communication shape human experience. In "The Electronic Revolution" (1970), he explored the implications of technology on consciousness, urging readers to consider the effects of mass media on individual identity. His insights into the relationship between technology and society remain relevant today, as discussions around digital culture and its impact on human interactions continue to evolve.

In addition to his literary contributions, Burroughs was also an influential figure in visual art. He collaborated with various artists, using his cut-up techniques to create visual works that challenged traditional artistic forms. His experimental approach to art and literature blurred the boundaries between disciplines, reflecting his belief in the interconnectedness of creative expression.

William S. Burroughs passed away on August 2, 1997, but his legacy endures. His radical ideas, innovative narrative techniques, and exploration of the human experience continue to inspire writers, artists, and thinkers around the world. Burroughs' belief in the power of love and compassion as a counter to hostility serves as a poignant reminder of the potential for transformation in the face of adversity.

As we reflect on Burroughs' contributions to literature and culture, we are reminded of the importance of embracing love and creativity as tools for navigating the complexities of life. His life and work exemplify the enduring power of art to challenge, provoke, and inspire change.

This 8th century Anglo Saxon sword pommel was found in 1964 by a workman who was excavating the foundations for Smith's Printing Works (now Monotype House, Fetter Lane, in London). It was purchased by John Allen (son of the famous publisher) from the workman for half-a-crown (worth about two pounds today, enough for a coffee).

The following description is from the British Museum: “It is decorated on both sides with a dense patterning of animal and plant ornament, consisting of, on one side, a spiral of four snakes separated by undulating leafy stems; on the other side, a spread-eagled beast with gaping jaws in profile encircles its body with its zoomorphic tail, against a background of leafy shoots.”

Italy: Piazza dell'Anfiteatro in Lucca was created from the ruins of a Roman amphitheater built in the second century, which could accommodate approximately 10,000 people.

The current oval shape of the square mirrors the outline of the original amphitheater.

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is a public square in the northeast quadrant of the walled center of Lucca, region of Tuscany, Italy.

The ring of buildings surrounding the square follows the elliptical shape of the former second century Roman amphitheater of Lucca.

The square can be reached through four gateways located at the four vertices of the ellipse. A cross is carved into the central tile of the square with the arms pointing to the four gateways of the square.

This is one of most beatifull objects in the collection at the British Museum.

Stylistically and anatomically ıt's a masterpiece. We're looking at a marble grave relief depicting a Greek warrior from 1st century BC Rhodes.

The warrior is wearing a cuirass and helmet and the serpent at the base represents the soul of the deceased. It depicts the soldier wearing the armour from an earlier period-the mid 5th century BC.
