Aristotle

"Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well."

"Aristotle was a Greek philosopher and polymath during the Classical period in Ancient Greece. Taught by Plato, he was the founder of the Lyceum, the Peripatetic school of philosophy, and the Aristotelian tradition. His writings cover many subjects including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theatre, music, rhetoric, psychology, linguistics, economics, politics, meteorology, geology and government.

Aristotle provided a complex synthesis of the various philosophies existing prior to him. It was above all from his teachings that the West inherited its intellectual lexicon, as well as problems and methods of inquiry. As a result, his philosophy has exerted a unique influence on almost every form of knowledge in the West and it continues to be a subject of contemporary philosophical discussion. Little is known about his life. Aristotle was born in the city of Stagira in Northern Greece."

Vikings beheaded by Anglo-Saxons - England

(execution pit with the remains of 51 individuals)

Near Weymouth in 2009, archaeologists have found a execution pit containing the remains of 51 decapitated Vikings.

These vikings were captured and executed by the Anglo-Saxons between 910 and 1030.

The skeletons were naked, and the heads were stacked neatly next to the bodies.

Analysis of the Vikings' teeth revealed that they came from several parts of Scandinavia, including a person who came from the north of the Arctic Circle.

This discovery offers a unique insight into the conflicts between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings during that period.

The main battles between the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons:

Year 789 - First Viking Attack: Three ships from Hordaland (Norway) land on Portland Island, off the south coast of Wessex.

825 - Battle of Ellendun: King Egberto of Wessex defeated the Mercians, establishing Wessex's power in Great Britain.

Year 838 - Battle of Hengest Hill: An alliance between the Cornwallians and the Vikings was defeated by King Egberto of Wessex.

Year 878 - Battle of Edington: Alfredo the Great defeated a large Danish invasion force, marking a turning point in Anglo-Saxon resistance.

937 - Battle of Brunanburh: King \u00C6thelstan of Wessex defeated an alliance of Vikings and Celts, consolidating his power in England.

Year 1013 - Invasion of Swein Forkbeard: The King of Denmark, Swein Forkbeards, invaded England with the intent to conquer, not just to plunder.

These battles were crucial in the formation of the Kingdom of England and in resisting Viking invasions.

Viking invasions gradually diminished following the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, where King Harold Godwinson of England defeated King Harald Hardrada of Norway.

This event is often considered the end of the great Viking invasion of England.

Vikings settled in several regions outside Scandinavia in the 8th century and continued into the 11th century:

- Iceland: Vikings began to settle in Iceland around 870 AD. The island was colonized mainly by Norwegians, but also by Swedes and Danes1.

- Greenland: The colonization of Greenland began around 980 A.D., with Erik, the Red, being a central figure in this process.

- Vinland (Canada): The Vikings established a colony in Vinland, which is now the Newfoundland region, Canada, in the year 1000.

- United Kingdom and Ireland: Vikings began to settle in Britain and Ireland in the late 8th century, founding cities such as Dublin and York.

- France: The Vikings settled in the Normandy region, France, in the 9th century, after settling in the Danelaw region in England.

- Russia: The Vikings, known as the Varangians, settled along the rivers of Russia and established trade routes leading to the Byzantine Empire.

These colonies not only expanded the reach of the Vikings but also had a significant impact on local cultures and societies.

Viking attacks in England and other countries gradually diminished over time, especially after the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066. This battle, where King Harold Hardrada of Norway was defeated by King Harold Godwinson of England, is often considered the end of the great Viking invasion.

The Vikings have established themselves. if in many places, even the most inhospitable, for various reasons, combining practical needs with cultural and social aspirations:

- Even in inhospitable locations, the Vikings sought out valuable resources, such as precious metals, animal skins, and fertile lands for agriculture.

- Establishing colonies in remote areas offered a way to escape disputes and conflicts in their homelands.

- Vikings were skilled navigators and traders. Establishing colonies allowed them to control trade routes and expand their markets.

- Territorial expansion and the establishment of colonies were ways to increase the prestige and status of Viking leaders within their own communities.

- Vikings were known for their ability to adapt to different environments and extreme weather conditions.

After the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, many Vikings began to return to their home countries, such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

However, some remained in the colonies they had established, such as in Iceland, Greenland, Normandy (France) and parts of Russia.

Franz Kafka was a man consumed by dualities—an artist trapped in a bureaucrat’s body, a son crushed beneath the weight of an overbearing father, a lover forever estranged from intimacy.

Born in Prague in 1883, Kafka lived at the crossroads of fading empires and emerging modernity, a world teetering between ancient traditions and the cold, impersonal machinery of industrialization. By day, he toiled in an insurance office, navigating labyrinthine regulations, but by night, he poured his soul into writing—shaping the despair, alienation, and absurdity of his existence into haunting literary forms. It was during one of his darkest periods, suffocating under the weight of his father’s disapproval and his own self-loathing, that Kafka wrote The Trial.

The novel, left unfinished at his death in 1924, is a bleak allegory of power, guilt, and humanity’s futile struggle against incomprehensible authority.

The story begins with an arrest. Josef K., an unremarkable man in an unnamed city, is detained one morning without explanation. What follows is a nightmarish descent into a world of faceless judges, opaque accusations, and endless corridors of shifting rules. K. learns nothing of his crime, only that he must defend himself in a system that offers no clarity, no justice, and no escape.

Kafka’s world mirrors the bureaucratic sprawl of early 20th-century Europe, where the individual was increasingly dwarfed by the machine of the state. Written during the rise of totalitarianism and the slow erosion of personal freedoms, The Trial captured the growing fear that modern life was stripping humanity of its dignity and autonomy.

“It’s only because of their stupidity that they’re able to be so sure of themselves,” one character sneers, encapsulating the grim satire of Kafka’s vision. In the novel’s harrowing climax, Josef K. is led to his execution, bewildered and defeated, and stabbed “like a dog.” Kafka himself died at the age of 40, his genius unrecognized, but The Trial remains a timeless indictment of the dehumanizing forces that continue to shadow us—a work as unsettling and enigmatic as the man who created it.

The Biggest Waves in the World.

The Nazaré waves, located on the coast of Nazaré, 🇵🇹 Portugal, are famous for being some of the largest in the world.

This phenomenon is caused by the Nazaré Canyon, an underwater canyon 200 kilometers long and 5 kilometers deep, which amplifies the size of the waves.

Surfers from all over the world come to Nazaré to challenge these giant waves, especially in winter, when conditions are more conducive to forming waves that can exceed 20 meters in height.

This destination has become an epicenter of big wave surfing, attracting both professionals and spectators looking to witness the impressive spectacle of nature.

Peyote is a small, spineless cactus native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States, known scientifically as Lophophora williamsii.

It's prohibited in Mexico. The cactus grows to a height of 2 to 7 cm and a diameter of 4 to 12 cm, with the part above ground called the "corona."

This corona consists of disk-shaped sections that contain mescaline, a psychoactive compound.

Excerpt from: My Days With Doors and Other Stories by Doug Lubahn

https://youtu.be/oOzpncIHCLs

It’s October 1967 and we’re rehearsing for “Waiting for the Sun” in the new offices of The Doors, a small two-story office building at La Cienega in Los Angeles.

They have a great rehearsal room with acoustic amps one of the best lines. The amplifiers were obtained through a promotional agreement with the manufacturer: we exclusively use their amplifiers; in return, we get all the amplifiers we want for free! Truckloads of 'em! Blow an amp ? No problem at all! A new one will be delivered the next day.

The Doors have become a well-known name. A few months ago, “Light My Fire” spent three weeks at the top of the charts. Then their debut album, after hesitating for months, took off like a rocket and reached No. 2.

They've achieved overnight stardom that few can imagine: sold-out tours; a constant stream of interviews and camera flashes. They are always in the public eye! They handle it well. In the interviews I watch, they all appear united and tremendously intelligent.

But in the studio there's a new tension. The intense pressure is taking its toll: it's in their faces. The lush stares are gone. They're not as happy or excited. It's becoming more like a business: get in, do the work, and go home. . .

"I have a lot of things to do."

Jim sometimes shows up when he wants to, which drives the rest of the band crazy.

They're more impatient. Are they richer? Yes! Are you happier? Probably, but it's not that obvious anymore. Music is still wonderfully interesting and there are many good days we all go out smiling. But tension and nervousness are affecting about a quarter of our study time. They are bad days, and when they pass, it's a "see you tomorrow" and everyone goes on their way.

Trainspotting 1996

Trainspotting (1996), directed by Danny Boyle, is a raw and exhilarating exploration of addiction, friendship, and the harsh realities of life in Edinburgh. Based on Irvine Welsh’s novel, the film follows a group of heroin addicts, led by the irreverent Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), as they navigate a world of highs, lows, and brutal consequences.

https://youtu.be/uOz5Qm2EHQE

Through sharp wit, striking visuals, and a memorable soundtrack, Trainspotting captures the chaotic and disillusioned lives of its characters with an unapologetic edge.

At the core of the film is Renton’s struggle to break free from the grip of heroin addiction. His attempts to escape the cycle of self-destruction are juxtaposed with the toxic but deep bonds he shares with his friends, including the reckless Begbie (Robert Carlyle) and the laid-back Spud (Ewen Bremner). While Renton is often the film’s moral center, his internal conflict between choosing a better life or staying with his destructive peers is portrayed with a mix of dark humor and tragedy.

Boyle’s direction is electric, using rapid editing, inventive camerawork, and surreal imagery to capture the distorted reality of addiction. The film’s iconic scenes, like Renton’s plunge into a filthy toilet and the electrifying “Choose Life” monologue, showcase Boyle’s ability to blend discomfort with sharp commentary on youth culture and societal disillusionment.

The soundtrack, featuring tracks from Iggy Pop, Underworld, and Lou Reed, amplifies the energy and attitude of the film, making it feel like an unforgettable cultural moment.

Trainspotting is more than just a film about addiction; it’s a portrait of youth in revolt, of searching for meaning in a world full of emptiness. It’s gritty, unapologetically dark, and yet, beneath the nihilism, there’s a sense of hope as Renton attempts to redefine his life.

The film’s impact is undeniable—it remains a landmark of 90s cinema, blending the gritty with the surreal, the tragic with the hilarious.

KEPENEK is a traditional garment worn by Turkish shepherds, designed to resemble a thick, tent-like cloak. Made from felt, this sleeveless and buttonless covering drapes over the shoulders and envelops the body entirely.

Typically white with occasional decorative elements, kepeneks can be up to one centimeter thick and are sold by weight. Dry, they weigh about 6kg, but exposure to rain can increase their weight to as much as 10kg.

Beyond serving as clothing, kepeneks are versatile enough to act as temporary shelters, providing warmth and protection for nomadic shepherds in cold weather.

A 2000 year-old Bronze Matrix of Sarmizegetusa : In the world of archaeological discoveries, few finds enchant the mind as much as the hexagonal bronze matrix found at Sarmizegetusa Regia in Romania.

This remarkable artifact, which dates back two thousand years, was uncovered from the roots of a tree uprooted by a storm in 2013, quickly becoming the centerpiece of Dacian and Roman Civilization Museum in Deva.

Weighing an impressive 8 kg and measuring 5 cm in thickness, this distinctive hexagonal matrix showcases eight sides, each intricately detailed with various sculptures.

Its surface teems with an array of mythical and real creatures, including noble griffins and powerful lions and tigers, providing insight into the rich symbolism of ancient Mediterranean and Pontic cultures.

Scholars suggest that this matrix was an essential tool for Dacian jewelers, allowing them to create stunning decorative items from precious metals.

Its discovery within Sarmizegetusa Regia, the capital of the Dacian Kingdom, highlights the region's flourishing artistic expression during the turbulent times of Roman conquest.

SOLVED THE MYSTERY OF ATLANTIS

The mystery of Atlantis is no longer a mystery. The story quoted by the Greek philosopher, Plato, citing the story of Atlantis as told by the Egyptian priests of Sais, was not a fable. The Egyptians had told the Greek philosopher about the existence of a people who dwelt partly (1) on a “Big Island,” partly (2) on a continent, and partly (3) on a series of smaller islands that lay at a close distance between the “Big Island” and the continent. All this was located near the “Pillars of Hercules,” that is, near the Strait of Gibraltar.

...

Thanks to modern satellites that can look even beneath the sand and under the waters, we now know that more than 7,000 years ago a gigantic river originated in the Atlas Mountains between Morocco and Algeria and flowed into the coast of Mauritania. The river was so wide and long that it could be considered as a small inland sea. This river actually cut off a piece of the coast of North Africa, creating a kind of “Big Island” (although it was connected to the mainland for a bit). Being located at the foot of Mount Atlas (which still retains this name), the inhabitants were called Atlanteans, and the land on which they lived was named “Atlantis.”

...

The continental part was located, according to the story, opposite the “Big Island.” It was therefore Spain, and specifically Cadiz. The region of Cadiz is mentioned directly by Plato as an area of the domain of the Atlanteans. Several scholars had already identified Cadiz as the area “beyond the Pillars of Hercules” where the people mentioned by Plato lived. To get to Cadiz, in fact, coming from Greece or Egypt, one must cross the Strait of Gibraltar.

...

The small islands that led from the “Big Island” (i.e., the coast of Mauritania) to the mainland (i.e., Spain) were the Canary Islands. Before the deglaciation that began about 14,000 years ago, which raised the water by more than 110 meters, these islands were much more numerous, actually leading from the coast of Mauritania into Spain.

...

This explanation, however, opens up a great mystery. How is it possible that the priests of Sais knew the geography of the African continent as it was about 14,000 years ago, before deglaciation? What vanished civilization had handed down this knowledge that had been lost over time, and which we now know only thanks to satellites?
