35 Survival Items You Can Make At Home.

I've met quite a few preppers who regularly purchase all sorts of survival items, but who never actually make their own survival items (you know who you are). There are many reasons why this is a huge mistake, but let's focus on two in particular:

First of all, you're wasting money if you're buying things that are cheaper to make at home. And second, during a long-term disaster where grocery store shelves are all empty, you might be forced to make your own stuff. So why not go ahead and learn how?

Below you'll find a list of 35 survival items that are fairly easy to make. For each one, I included a link to a tutorial that will walk you through it. So next time you're bored, try making one of these and don't forget to leave a comment letting me know how it went.

Want to save this post for later? Click Here to Pin It On Pinterest!

Antibiotic Wound Cream

Being able to dress wounds properly is essential in any survival situation, and having an easy-to-make recipe on hand will keep you from having to scavenge for antibiotic ointment.

Aquaponics Garden

For a more long-term sustainable food option, try your hand at balancing the ecosystems of a garden and an aquarium with an aquaponics garden.

Beef Jerky

The great thing about beef jerky is that it's very portable and lasts a long time. If you're on the move or working hard all day, a delicious piece of beef jerky from your pocket can be a great pick-me-up.

Butter

Having homemade butter on hand will be extremely useful for cooking when the SHTF, particularly if you’re tied down to cooking outdoors without non-stick cookware.

Candles

For anyone surviving without electricity (or with limited access to it), candles are quite beneficial as a source of light, heat, and as a bug repellent.

Char Cloth

Char cloth is a very useful material to help you in the fire-starting process, giving you excellent tinder that will light instantly in many different conditions.

Charcoal

If you learn to make your own charcoal, you can keep grilling out no matter how long it takes for grocery stores to get charcoal back in stock. It's actually easier than you might think, it just takes a little time.

Cooler

Keep your perishable items cool without electricity by making an insulated cooler. Use a cardboard box, some foam, foil, and bubble wrap to make it. This makeshift cooler can be a game-changer for food preservation.

Deodorant

While not a necessity for survival, deodorant can do wonders for your morale and humanity by keeping you smelling fresh.

DIY Grain Mill

In a long-term survival scenario, being able to process grains into flour will be crucial. You can construct a simple grain mill using boards, PVC, and plywood to grind wheat, corn, or other grains. This homemade mill will be invaluable for making bread, tortillas, or other food items from scratch.

Emergency Bread

This is a recipe for a simple flat bread that is surprisingly filling. You can make ordinary sandwiches with it, or you can use it as a tortilla to make wraps, burritos, or whatever you want.

Fire Starter

Having a tried and true fire starter can be the difference between life and death in a survival scenario. Having a good fire starter will make it far easier to get a fire going.

Fishing Net

A fishing net can greatly increase your chances of catching food. With some sturdy twine or cordage and a little patience, you can knot a net to help sustain you. This skill might take some practice, but it's a valuable asset in a survival situation.

Fuel

A sustainable life after SHTF may require some sort of fuel to power engines and generators for transportation and generating power. Fortunately, there is a DIY process for making your own ethanol.

Hard Tack

This simple snack only has three ingredients (flour, salt, and water), and it's very easy to make. Plus, it will last for years.

Lotion

You’ll want to keep your skin in good and healthy condition so it doesn't get itchy or cracked. Disasters are hard enough as it is, so anything that will minimize discomfort is worth doing.

Mosquito Trap

Protect yourself from the annoyance and potential diseases carried by mosquitoes with a DIY trap. Cut a plastic bottle in half, and invert the top into the bottom. Boil water with brown sugar, cool it, and pour it into the bottom half, then add yeast to create carbon dioxide, attracting mosquitoes. Cover the trap with black cloth, and place it in a mosquito-prone area.

Oil Lamp

An oil lamp is even better than a candle since it provides a little more light can't get knocked over as easily. All you need is a wick, a mason jar, and some olive oil.

Paracord Belt

You never know when you’ll be in a situation where a few feet of rope could make all the difference. Wearing a paracord belt is a great way to carry a great length of rope at all times.

Plant Pest Deterrent

Protect your survival garden without commercial pesticides by making your own. Common ingredients like garlic, onion, cayenne pepper, and soap can be mixed with water and sprayed on plants to keep pests at bay.

Poultice

You’ll want to have some sort of substance to ease your pain and bring inflammation down when you suffer wounds and injuries, and poultice is an herbal solution you can forage for and find in many different areas.

PVC Bow

For hunting game small to large and even for protection, fewer DIY weapons are more useful and simpler to make than a bow reinforced with PVC.

Rainwater Collection System

Water is life, and setting up a rainwater collection system can be as simple as positioning clean barrels or buckets under your gutter's downspouts. For more advanced setups, consider adding a filtration system to make the water potable.

Rocket Stove

A rocket stove is easy to make and can do wonders for your survival cooking, allowing you to bridge the gap between proper kitchen cooking and roughing it over a campfire without any cooking utensils.

Soap

Soap is something every prepper should learn how to make. Hygiene will be even more important during a long-term disaster where sanitation is on the decline, diseases are on the rise, and doctors are unavailable.

Solar Dehydrator

Preserving food is crucial, and a solar dehydrator can be made with some wood, a window, a screen, stretchable cloth and some hardware. This setup allows you to dry fruits, vegetables, and meats using the power of the sun, extending their shelf life significantly.

Solar Oven

In a survival situation you will most likely not have access to a stove, but you can increase your odds of survival by learning how to create your own solar cooker, which uses the energy of the sun to heat up a chamber for cooking.

Sunscreen

Protect your skin from harsh sun rays by making your own sunscreen. Ingredients like zinc oxide (non-nano), coconut oil, and shea butter can be mixed to create a protective barrier. This is especially crucial in environments where you're exposed to the sun for long periods.

Tin Can Stove

This is a simple stove that uses a few candles to heat up things like canned food and warm drinks, and even make flatbread.

Traps

Carrying enough food in a bug out bag to survive for months at a time is practically impossible. Instead, try carrying a few homemade traps or the materials to make one.

Washing Machine

Hygiene is crucial, and clean clothes can keep you healthy. Create a simple hand-powered washing machine with a clean plunger and a 5-gallon bucket with a lid. Drill a hole in the lid for the plunger handle, and you've got a way to wash clothes without electricity.

Water Filter

Having drinkable water is one of the basic essentials for human survival. Knowing how to make your own water filter can save your life in a survival situation.

Waterproof Matches

Waterproof matches are exceedingly useful for anyone spending time outdoors and starting their own fires, as they can be used even in wet and cold weather.

Wind Turbine

Generate your own electricity with a DIY wind turbine. You can use a car alternator, PVC pipes for blades, and a sturdy frame to hold everything together. While this project is more complex, the ability to produce your own power is invaluable.

Zeer Pot

Extend the life of your food and keep it fresh with a homemade Zeer pot. Zeer pots have been used in many rural locations in Africa and the Middle East as a way to naturally refrigerate food and keep it fresh longer.

Born on this date, August 19, 1939 in Lewisham, South London, notoriously cantankerous and outspoken Peter 'Ginger' Baker, drummer extraordinaire with the Graham Bond Organization, Cream, Blind Faith, and Ginger Bakers Airforce. Baker was also a member of the Graham Bond Organization, Blind Faith, and Ginger Bakers Airforce and is also known for his numerous associations with World music, mainly the use of African influences.

https://youtu.be/1EKaflXTzHw

He has also had other collaborations such as with Gary Moore, Hawkwind and Public Image Ltd. Baker's work in the 1960s earned him the reputation of "rock's first superstar drummer," while his individual style melds a jazz background with African rhythms. Baker is credited as a pioneer of drumming in genres like jazz fusion, heavy metal and world music.

Baker began playing drums at age 15, and later took lessons from Phil Seamen. In the 1960s, he joined Blues Incorporated, where he met bassist Jack Bruce. The two clashed often, but would be rhythm section partners again in the Graham Bond Organization and Cream, the latter of which Baker co-founded with Eric Clapton in 1966.

Cream achieved worldwide success but lasted only until 1968, in part due to Baker's and Bruce's volatile relationship. After briefly working with Clapton in Blind Faith and leading Ginger Baker's Air Force, Baker spent several years in the 1970s living and recording in Africa, often with Fela Kuti, in pursuit of his long-time interest in African music.

Between 1975 and '76 he released three hard rock albums with The Baker Gurvitz Army with members formerly in Gun.

Baker lived in Parker, Colorado, a rural commuter town at the southeastern corner of the Denver Metropolitan Area, between 1993 and 1999, in part due to his passion for polo. Baker not only participated in polo events at the Salisbury Equestrian Park, but he also sponsored an ongoing series of jam sessions and concerts at the equestrian centre on weekends.

In 1994, he formed The Ginger Baker Trio with bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist Bill Frisell. He also joined BBM, a short-lived power trio with the line-up of Baker, Jack Bruce and Irish blues rock guitarist Gary Moore.

On 3 May 2005, Baker reunited with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce for a series of Cream concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and Madison Square Garden. The London concerts were recorded and released as Royal Albert Hall London May 2–3–5–6 2005 (2005).

In a Rolling Stone article written in 2009, Bruce is quoted as saying, "It's a knife-edge thing between me and Ginger. Nowadays, we're happily co-existing in different continents [Bruce, who died in 2014, lived in Britain, while Baker lived in South Africa] ... although I was thinking of asking him to move. He's still a bit too close".

In 2012, the documentary film Beware of Mr. Baker of Ginger Baker's life by Jay Bulger had its world premiere at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, where it won the grand jury award for best documentary feature.

Baker's drumming is regarded for its style, showmanship, and use of two bass drums instead of the conventional one. In his early days, he performed lengthy drum solos, most notably in the Cream song "Toad", one of the earliest recorded examples in rock music. Baker is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Cream, of the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2008, and of the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2016.

Neil Peart has said: "His playing was revolutionary – extrovert, primal and inventive. He set the bar for what rock drumming could be. [...] Every rock drummer since has been influenced in some way by Ginger – even if they don't know it".

Baker battled heroin addiction since the early 1960s and claimed he kicked it 29 times only to relapse each time. He finally came clean after moving to an olive farm in Italy.

Baker died on 6 October 2019 at the age of 80, at a hospital in Canterbury.

Can a keyboard shape the entire sound of a band?

https://youtu.be/Fl_EofBvew4

In the case of the doors, absolutely. Ray Manzarek’s hypnotic, hypnotic keyboard work was the backbone of the band’s identity. Without a bassist in the lineup, Manzarek played bass lines and melody on his instruments, giving the doors his signature depth and drama.

From the opening notes of "Light My Fire" to the haunting licks of "Riders on the Storm," Manzarek's rendition was psychedelic and classic, blending jazz, blues and rock into a mesmerizing stew. His organ was a lead voice, not a background, equal in power to the poetry and presence of Jim Morrison.

Manzarek co-founded the doors in 1965 after a chance meeting with Morrison on Venice Beach. Their creative partnership would give birth to some of the most provocative music of the '60s. Even after Morrison's death, Manzarek kept the band's flame alive, after touring and recording with Robby Krieger.

He died in 2013 at the age of 74, but his influence is still vivid. Ray Manzarek expanded the role of keyboards in rock, turning them into an instrument of mood, tension and storytelling. His sound was the spiritual world under the fire of the gates: mysterious, bold, unforgettable.

DID YOU KNOW JOHN FOGERTY WROTE “HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN” ABOUT CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL’S TENSIONS?

Every band has its ups and downs; it’s an inevitable facet of the music industry. Frankly, every creative type has a little bit of an ego, and when that ego is met with success, tensions will rise. It is a tale as old as music itself and has transpired hundreds upon hundreds of times in the music business.

https://youtu.be/Gu2pVPWGYMQ

Consequently, it has amounted to some break-ups, but it has also amounted to some one-of-a-kind songs and albums. Regarding the latter, Creedence Clearwater Revival and their biggest hit is a great example of turning something bad into good.

In the ’60s, CCR acquired a load of success thanks to their expansive catalog of hit songs. However, when the ’70s rolled around, the success and lifestyle seemingly caught up with John Fogerty and the rest of the band, as tensions were high and Fogerty feared a break-up. As a result of this conflict, Fogerty wrote the band’s biggest all-time hit, “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?”

The Tempestuous Inspiration Behind Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Big Hit

While sitting down with Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show, John Fogerty spoke about the inspiration for the song in a very transparent manner. He told Stern, “I perceived all the attention and it just looked like it was breaking up it really did.” “The metaphor of seeing the rain come down from a clear sunshiny day, it seemed to be what we were.”

John Fogerty concluded, “Here we were, we were achieving all of our dreams, everything great” and “Instead of being happy we seemed to be miserable.” Fogerty never disclosed the inspiration and the meaning of the song to the band. Matter of fact, they didn’t even pick up on the meaning of the song.

That being so, this song cannot be specifically attributed to saving CCR. Though, the success of the single certainly helped them stay together for just a little bit longer.

Released in 1970, “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, in 2021, the song peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Rock Digital Song Sales Chart. To this day, the single remains as Creedance Clearwater Revival’s biggest all-time hit.

After the release of the acclaimed single, Creedance Clearwater Revival did remain together. However, two years later, they finally broke up in 1972 after a very illustrious career.

Promoters John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfield and Michael Lang originally envisioned the festival as a way to raise funds to build a recording studio and rock-and-roll retreat near the town of Woodstock, New York. The longtime artists’ colony was already a home base for Bob Dylan and other musicians.

The Sea Ranch chapel was conceived as a non-denominational chapel for a small alternative community in northern California. In the Sea Ranch Chapel, James Hubbel combines sculpture and architecture. The building was constructed without any real technical working drawings, but was instead shaped and created on site.

The Chapel consists of two separate and distinct elements. The base, constructed of stone and slate grows out of the ground to a height of little more than a meter high, while a fluid, shingle clad form appears to rest gently on top. The billowing shingled form lifts at points to allow light to flood the interior through stained art glass windows. The materials are carried from inside out, through the glass openings, to maintain the integrity of the two separate elements and to break definitions between the interior and exterior. By maintaining the two separate elements, the interior space, although largely obscured from the exterior environment, feels more like the product of the meeting of these two forms than a space defined by architecture.

The sculptured wood and twisted wrought iron of the interior fittings combine with a large spiralling plaster ceiling element that incorporates beach sand and sea shells to give the building a natural and tactile feel. The ephemeral patterns in the art glass cast a wash of subtle colours over the interior space and bring warmth to the slate stone floor. To occupy the Sea Ranch Chapel is a natural and spiritual experience.

THE DOORS & THE MOVIES 🎥

From the jungles of Apocalypse Now to Oliver Stone’s epic biopic, The Doors have always had a cinematic soul. Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek studied film at UCLA, and it shows — their music plays like a movie in sound, full of drama, tension, and atmosphere.

https://youtu.be/xpN54k93ugM

Their 11-minute masterpiece “The End” became one of the most iconic openings in film history when Francis Ford Coppola used it to set the tone for Apocalypse Now. In 1991, Oliver Stone’s The Doors brought Val Kilmer’s uncanny portrayal of Morrison to the big screen, mixing fact and legend in a psychedelic swirl.

🎸Rock on with this classic! http://countrydaily.store/the-doors-and-cinema-from-oliver-stone-to-the-documentary-lens/

For a more authentic view, the 2009 documentary When You’re Strange used rare footage and Morrison’s own short films to tell the story in their own words and images.

From myth to reality, The Doors’ relationship with cinema proves one thing: they were more than a rock band. They were storytellers, directors, and dreamers. And the reel keeps rolling.

On October 19, 1953, Ray Bradbury released Fahrenheit 451, a novel that asked us to consider the cost of losing our connection to knowledge and truth.

In an interview with Dana Gioia, former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, he said, "I’ve tried not to predict, but to protect and to prevent," Bradbury’s mission wasn’t about guessing the future—it was about safeguarding the present.

In a world full of distractions, he urged us to remember the quiet power of books, libraries, and real thought.

As we celebrate the anniversary of Fahrenheit 451, what lessons from the novel still hold true today?
