They enable bad actors because
- they can be faked (scammers on youtube and twitter rely on bought likes and follows to make them appear legitimate)
- they distract people from plain LN, which has none of the drawbacks of zaps but can send / receive value just as well. Newbies now come to see zaps as the "de facto" way of sending / receiving sats. A bad actor who wishes to hinder LN adoption would encourage zaps, because once new adopters see that scams are very possible with zaps, once they see "sats" can be printed out of thin air, they will conclude there is no difference between bitcoin and shitcoins.

It's the combo of human psyche + the environment.
In the Stanford Prison Experiment, the environment is what turned normal people into brutal sadistic guards and defeated self-imprisoned prisoners.
On nostr, the environment (i.e. the clients, constructs, concepts) people interact with can have more influence on the outcome than people imagine.
Because they guide behavior and frame the user's thinking. You need to expend effort to escape bad framing, or to re-frame.
Fortunately, on nostr no one one person or group is in charge, so different clients (with different built-in expectations, framing) can compete and coexist.
TL;DR: bullish on nostr
I think zaps will incentivize the opposite.
If you want to reward people on nostr, you already can with simple LN tips. Nobody has to know, other than you and the recipient. If you want the recipient to know it was from you, you can send a DM, a reply or add a comment in the LN payment.
Simple, private, elegant.
Zaps, since they're public, bring other incentives (vanity, peer pressure, perceived importance of highly-zapped notes or profiles, etc).
Influencers are already pushing it. Some are shaming wallet devs into integrating it. Memes are memed into existence and hype is hyped to the sky.
Soon you will have a sea of people on nostr who see zaps as inherently valuable.
In such a world, whoever can fake zaps is king. Whereas "plebs" have to earn zaps backed by real sats, sent by real people -- such an individual could "print" themselves some, and get all the social clout for free.
Turns out anyone can do that. There are two ways:
1. Since zaps are not "anchored" in LN (the same way LN is anchored in BTC onchain), one can receive zaps without having received any LN payment. Its a matter of publishing the right kind of events to the relay.
2. A different way is you can zap yourself from different (sockpuppet) accounts. You could recycle 1 sat endless times, and increment your "zap counter" as much as you like.
So not only are zap incentives skewed, but they're also an unreliable metric. Anything that can be measured in zaps (appreciation? relevance of a post?) can be gamed, because received zaps can be faked.
In addition, they're distracting people from the simple and effective LN tips, which don't suffer from any of the above.

Makes sense, then it's working as intended.
It's not a bug for me, just an observation. I'm ok with dragging instead of scrolling.
Still think there is room for creativity, just so few are creative.
Smooth scrolling works, but interferes with another cool feature.
Unread notes have a reddish background. On mouseover, the reddish tint goes away, as if the note is marked as read.
When I start the smooth scrolling, the mouseover won't mark notes as read anymore, until the scrolling completely finishes. So mouse wheel up, wait 2-3 seconds until scrolling stops, then mouseover will mark notes as read.
How I work around it is: instead of normal scrolling, I "drag" the list. I click and hold, move cursor up or down, release click. Voila, the list scrolled and "mark as read" works instantly.
Cool. Wallet of Satoshi has a built-in LN Address as well (Receive > Lightning Address).
If you send sats from your umbrel LN node to your Wallet of Satoshi, this will create inbound liquidity on your umbrel channel + you'll have some sats in your WoS wallet.

Powerful + risky = dangerous.
Yes zaps are powerful, but receiving zaps can be faked. If people and apps promote zaps as a way to send / receive value, they're priming others to fall for fake signals.
"Top most zapped post" / "most zapped article in this store" / "5 people zapped Bob 1 BTC for a DM convo" -- no way to tell if zaps are fake or real, but impact and social pressure for viewers is real.
How influencers shitcoin now to get money out of gullible people, zaps will do the same.
A statis address by which you can receive to a LN wallet = a Lightning Address. Under the hood, this takes care of LNURL as well, more specifically LNURL-pay (so others can pay to your address).
