Cable Bacteria – A Natural Analogy: An extraordinary example of microbes manipulating electric charge to affect oxygen is the cable bacterium. These bacteria form multicellular filaments several centimeters long that act like living wires . In marine sediments, cable bacteria use this ability to access oxygen that is physically separated from their food source. As the diagram above shows, one end of the filament stays in an oxygenated zone and breathes oxygen with very high efficiency, while cells at the other end, buried in oxygen-poor mud, break down food and generate electrons . The electrons are conducted up the chain to the oxygen, effectively allowing the bacteria to behave as if they were aerobic even deep in the sediment. Studies observed that <10% of the cable bacterium’s cells (the ones at the oxygenated end) were consuming oxygen at rates among the highest known in biology, while the rest of the cells remained anaerobic but survived by virtue of the electrical connection to O₂ . Cable bacteria thereby prevent their environment from becoming fully reduced – they oxidize toxic sulfides in deeper layers by funneling electrons to oxygen. This natural phenomenon underscores how electrical currents can influence oxygen distribution. In soil, we don’t have cable bacteria large enough to affect macroscopic conditions, but the principle is analogous to using a metal wire to connect an oxygen source to an oxygen-poor region.
