What a cool time to be alive. I’m strafing a star destroyer and dogfighting against tie fighters in full VR while streaming a great Bitcoin podcast through the same headset, using my phone as a remote control and periodically posting/zapping real money to people on an uncensorable communications protocol.

Tradespeople are so hard to come by up where we live, that the “shoe is literally on the other foot” in the customer/trades relationship. A lot of them act like they are doing you a favour just showing up.

Whereas back home closer to “civilization” it is a highly competitive market where trades are actively trying to earn your business, up here the only thing that we have to enforce good cleanups and good quality is written deficiency lists post-job, and 30% holdbacks on payment. On a new home build, if you let even one subtrade skip their cleanup or deficiencies, not only will the next trades simply drive away and go to their next multi-day contract when they see the mess, but you’ll quite quickly find yourself with a site that has no clear space for incoming materials. It can make hitting those already unrealistic closing dates nearly impossible.

One time I had to do 170 re-roofs as part of a big project we were awarded on the nearby airbase. Much of it was done in the winter. And because my employer had grossly underbid the labor, I ended up scrounging up 12 bottom of the barrel crews that were willing to do the bundles for 25% less than market. By the time the contract was over I bet I replaced half a dozen car and truck tires from nails left in driveways at tenant’s homes. Fuck I’m glad to be out of that business.

I just love seeing this. My one cat will actively encourage our hound to fight with him. The dog usually ends up dragging the cat around by his head ever so gently and the cat swats him with claws withdrawn to keep the fight going. It is so heartwarming.

With some colder weather dominating the weekends and having a little more time to curl up and binge the odd series on streaming, I was reminded of this one and gave it another watch. If you are interested in things about the period of the Roman empire before and during the slave rebellion, the age of gladiatorial combat, and a liberal mix of R rated debauchery, this series is really good. Seasons are available on Apple iTunes store and through Starz.

Season 1 - Spartacus: Blood and Sand

An introduction about how Spartacus came to be a slave and how he came to be one of the champions on the House of Batiatus in Capua.

Prequel Season - Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (Actually shot as a prequel season, since the leading actor in season 1, Andy Whitfield, passed away after season 1 shooting due to an aggressive cancer. A real tragedy and a real loss to the acting community).

Season 2 - Spartacus: Vengeance

A dramatization of events leading up to the slave rebellion.

Season 3 - Spartacus: War of the Damned

The progress of the slave rebellion, led by Spartacus and Crixus, as they are relentlessly pursued by the Empire.

If you can look beyond (or if it's appealing, directly at) the gratuitous nudity, sexuality and violence in the series and chalk it up to a portrayal of a time of general moral decay in Roman history, it is a great series.

The acting is on-point, the script and the language beautiful, the actors and actresses are stunning, and the twists and turns of the plot as Romans and slaves alike make plans for revenge, political power and wealth against their adversaries, are heart stopping. Full of triumphs and tragedies, and a lot of action.

There’s nothing better than crawfish etouffé. When we used to do business trips down to Houston and Galveston area, we’d have it at least once a day.

“Smack yo’ mama.”

One of our guys down there introduced me to that phrase and I just laughed my ass off when he told me what it meant; ie implying that a dish was so good it’d make you want to slap your mom for never having fed you something that good.

That print is actually a rendering of the position of the stars in the night sky from the location of my wife and my wedding almost 21 years ago. It’s inscribed “On this night, we became one xoxoxo.” So the big stars are the reflection of the Christmas tree lights, and the small ones are in the print. Kinda cool! Even if kind of sappy lol. Still one of my fav gifts over the years.

Amazing nowadays consists of not losing one’s shit at the ridiculousness of the world and eeking out a little extra each payday to save in real money.

I still remember a day when a $2000-$3000 project or goal was attainable inside a year’s time with a little dedicated savings. This is a distant memory now.

I used the afternoon of my last day of holidays to get the tree up with the girls. A couple more stocking stuffers, wrapping, and wincing through a staff party or two, and we can embrace another year. And hopefully a new government, if we must have one at all. #fucktrudeau #merrychristmas #btcnewyear

This UP-5 hot tent has been on my dream gear list for 3 years. I met a few couples in Ottawa and in Coutts AB for the trucker rallies that used them with a little wood stove and they are awesome.

I tried standing under one. I was all geared up with my hardware wallets and my seed plates, laptop, a rifle, a pistol and my “go bag”. No dice. They wouldn’t have me. Lol.

We have just the right temperature and suspended humidity conditions tonight that every light source in the neighborhood has a light pillar above it. Millions of tiny hexagonal ice crystals acting like mirrors.

Best Christmas sweater ever tonight at our staff party.
