I've used Ubuntu and Arch over a decade ago. I loved Arch, but I think Ubuntu or Mint will fit my needs well

F-droid is just as centralized as the PlayStore. They just have different rules (open source only) but can easily take down an app just because they want it down.
With things like Obtainium, you download the APK straight from the Amethyst repo. There is no list.
This. It requires a bit more maintenance than F-Droid but now it's my favorite way of getting apps
