If we assume units will be lost at a rate greater than 0 for the rest of time, at some point it will ALL be lost, and Bitcoin will eventually cease to exist.

A burn & reissue mechanism like this ensures the best money on the planet will be around forever!

Obviously, like every BIP, the community would decide if logic like this should be built-in to the protocol, but I presume this would merely be a timer-based rule - not some person making an arbitrary decision.
