But music has this strange quality which Alan Moore pointed out.

It makes you feel things, and it doesn’t matter how old it is or even who made it.

That feeling might be irritation or annoyance or reverence or joy…but it happens almost instantaneously.

Visual art can’t do this.

Rashomon requires multiple viewings or some understanding of the art form to break through indifference.

The written word can’t do this - try reading Chaucer without training.

Even dance can’t do this.

So there’s potentially something divine about music.

And perhaps its effects on a “society” are just a distraction.

The importance of music to teenagers and 20-somethings is undeniable, since their day-to-day experience can be hormonally-induced chaos, without a fully developed pre-frontal cortex to help regulate.

The complexity of the world post-government school indoctrination increases rapidly and the emotions transmitted via music are both comfort and validation.

But does it really have more significance than movies, TV shows, the news?

Maybe if its organic.

But reviewing the history of the music industry, there’s a great amount of inorganic Frankensteined product.

The Byrds didn’t understand why people didn’t like the Monkees, since the same players played the majority of the instruments on both of their albums.

Guns’n’Roses’ major label put out their 1st record on a fake indie label, Uzi Suicide, to give them more rebellious credibility. Are we to assume that the players organically came together without A&R or management involved, given the meat market that Southern California hard rock was at the time?

I knew a guy that was paid a day rate to noodle over Wilco’s tracks so they could harvest ideas.

More & more, music as a societally transformative power seems like a Boomer fantasy to me.

They “changed the world” by seeing Jefferson Airplane?

Did I do the same by seeing Slayer?

Arguably, Slayer has many more quality songs than Jefferson Airplane, and never had a “Starship” mutation.

Oh, that’s wonderful. There’s so much that’s good by him.

See also Tolkien’s conversation with him about stories being the a voice of God.

Out of the Silent Planet, by CS Lewis. Hadn’t read it since I was a kid, very interesting the second time.

Too soon. Europe must fall first.

Lower pressure in the middle and more to the edges to smooth & reduce sanding time.

They were beards. He did not divorce them. Their contracts were up.

I cut them out.

While I lost some benefits, the trade-off was a sort of slavery to their negativity. To them, negativity was the way the world worked.

Who the hell was I to tell them negativity wasn’t the only option, and how dare I want something else for my day to day existence?

I’d make that trade again tomorrow.

My wife & children are happy, we speak to each other respectfully, and we have the ability to excise drama and create boundaries driving out energy vampires.

(Just offering my experience, not recommending or suggesting you do the same.)

I drop “digital assets”.

If you are talking investments or economics or markets or whatever and you drop this, then they can out themselves as a shitcoiner.

This gives them the opportunity to ask, “which ones?”

They wax the hardwood floors with it, ring out the mop, and then pour it back into the dispenser.

But seriously, one time a co-worker stuck his head into the mound of popcorn, shook it around, then served it all to the next rush.
