We sometimes talk about #Bitcoin as a deflatonary money/currency. I have a question here. As we all know, there can't be more than (slightly less than) 21M BTC issued - it has halving, so no new BTC will be issued after around 2140. So can we call it deflationary? Isn't it just stop inflation?

I bring this up because I think the term deflatonary money is misleading: people say that because the dollar goes to zero, #Bitcoin goes to infinity. As a result, #Bitcoin goes up forever, people won't use it and it will be bad for the economy (to which I counter with subjective marginal utility and time preference).

I think they're half right and half wrong. It seems to me that while it's true that numbers are growing forever in fiat-denominated price, but purchasing power isn't growing forever. #Bitcoin is inflating, but the reason purchasing power has increased so far is because of increased adoption of #Bitcoin. Of course, it's also true that inflation of fiat money accelerates adoption of #Bitcoin, but at some point, when the #Bitcoin standard arrives, the increase in purchasing power due to adoption of #Bitcoin will stop. Even if fiat money remains at that point, the fiat-denominated price of #Bitcoin will increase, but it won't represent an increase in purchasing power.

On the other hand, it is possible for #Bitcoin to increase in purchasing power over the long term, but this will be due to technological progress, not due to inflation of fiat money or increased adoption of #Bitcoin.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the idea of the term Deflationary Money.

반은 맞고 반은 틀린 것 같습니다. 피앗 기준으로 보면 숫자가 영원히 증가하는 것은 맞지만 구매력이 영원히 증가하는 것은 아닌 것 같습니다. #Bitcoin 에 인플레이션이 일어나고 있지만 지금까지 구매력이 증가한 이유는 #Bitcoin 에 대한 수용이 늘어났기 때문입니다. 물론 피앗 머니의 인플레이션이 #Bitcoin 수용을 가속하는 것도 맞습니다. 하지만 언젠가 #Bitcoin 스탠다드가 도래하면 #Bitcoin 수용으로 인한 구매력 증가는 멈추게 됩니다. 만약 그 때 피앗 머니가 남아있다고 하더라도 #Bitcoin 의 피앗머니 표시 가격은 커지겠지만 구매력 증가를 의미하지 않습니다.

한편 #Bitcoin 이 장기적으로 구매력 증가를 유도하는 것도 맞습니다. 이것은 피앗머니의 인플레이션 또는 #Bitcoin 수용 증가 때문이 아닌 기술 발전 덕분일 것입니다.
