I make apps for retards, like LNBeats, Music Side Project, The Split Box, The Split Kit, Sovereign Feeds, CurioCaster and Transcript Search Tool

"Strong opinions loosely held"

Much harder to de-platform a web app. If you don't play by the app stores policies, they kick you out of the app store. The web is open.

For sure, it's not for everyone, and I realize that. I have a very specific person in mind when I build these tools. I'll let you in on a little secret. I'm building these things for me.

This is a hobby for me, and coding is one of my many creative outlets. That's why I haven't tried starting a business with any of this, I have found for me when I start mixing business with pleasure, the thing I enjoy doing ends up becoming work.

I realize I'm an odd person. I make my own wine, ferment my own food, grow vegetables in a garden, sew on my own buttons, have my own home gym, make my own candles, do my own home repairs, fix my own car, cook my own food, homeschool my children, built my own sprinkler system, do woodworking and leather work, read actual books, and host my own websites and feeds. Building apps is just another aspect of "I like to do things for myself".

I have found most people are content to consume rather than produce, to spend hours fingering their phone or watching their favorite team, eat unhealthy but convenient food, watch unhealthy but convenient content, read unhealthy but convenient social media posts. I realize the vast majority of people choose convenience. Those aren't my people.

The reason I'm on nostr promoting DIY solutions is because I thought there might be a higher percent of people like me. They're using buggy software on a new protocol, using money that's only 16 years old and most of the world doesn't understand. They talk about freedom tech and disrupting the system. I know not everyone here is going to be as independent as I am, and that's okay. There's lots of options for different people. I just want those that are more liberty or DIY minded to know that there are solutions available if they're willing to put in the work to discover a skill that will serve them for the rest of their lives. You seem like you might be one of those people. If so, I'm always happy to help a fellow traveler.

The free upload to try it out is a huge draw for sure. If I was a musician and was curious about what all this was about, free sounds like a damn fine deal. Now it’s not exactly free, it’s 10%, but if I only make $1 or even $10, 10% isn’t that big of a deal. I get the appeal, and the marketing is great.

So, what are the alternatives? I list quite a few of them here. musicsideproject.com/about

I’m not trying to convince you to use MSP, I just want you to know there are alternatives if you want them, and maybe it’s important to you to control the means of distribution for your digital property. If you have any quotations, I’m happy to help.

I just added them as an alternative on my Music Side Project page. I understand self hosting isn’t for everyone, so after they’ve considered what MSP can do for them, I want them to know there’s other ways to get their music out there that may better serve the interests. My heart is mainly that people are able to make informed decisions.

I’m not bashing on choosing a hosting company for your podcast or music. In the About for my app that walks you through the benefits of hosting your own, I acknowledge it’s not for everyone and even provide links to my ā€œcompetitionā€. I’m not competing with anyone. My stuff is truly v4v you are free to remove me from the split ( but I will call you a douchebag ). I don’t care who you use, I just want you to know you have options so you can make the choice that’s best for you.

What’s the cost for your music hosting plan for Podhome and a link? I want to add it to my list of alternatives on MSP. Self hosting isn’t for everyone, so I like them to know their options.

Nothing but freaks and geeks there, and one cool guy named Medus.

Oh yeah, we’re in complete agreement. Protocols over platforms. I’m not jaded about the protocols, quite optimistic actually. I’m jaded about platforms that use the protocols becoming something different once they’re successful. And I’m not even talking about nostr, I don’t know enough about nostr yet to have much of an opinion, I’m still playing around with the code so I can understand it better.

People upset they’re going to lose their Alby hosted wallet because n Jan and Alby charging 21k sats for Alby Cloud is too expensive. I’ve seen some comments about that stuff and I’ve worked with Alby for two years now, so I think they’re great guys.

Man, all of this Alby hate is so weird to me. Nobody wants to run their own node, because it's apparently too hard. So Alby runs one for two years, gives away wallets for free, then builds all of these tools FOR FREE that simplify running your own node. Then they say they're not going to run nodes anymore, but here's all these free tools you can use to do it yourself, and everyone shits on them and calls them rug pullers for not giving away even more of their time, talent, and treasure.

How much code have you contributed to them?

How many sats have any of you people bitching about them moving away from holding your keys ever given them?

They provided you two years of value, how much have you provided back?

v4v is a voluntary exchange, and either party can choose to change the value they provide at any time. Nobody owes you anything, least of all Alby who have been nothing but generous to all of us.

Maybe I'm jaded. I've been around long enough to have been my own top 8 on MySpace. I had a Facebook back when Mark was using it so he could get laid and when Twitter was just to share short messages with friends. So I've heard the story of the scrappy young team of developers that are going to change the world with their new ideas. And then the investors come in, and the new users, and the money, and somehow this thing morphs into another behemoth that controls far too much. Meet the new boss, same as the old. So, I'm a bit hesitant to trust a new platform that promises to unlock the potential of human creativity by giving a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art and billions of fans the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by it; revolutionizing music listening forever and moving into podcasting to bring innovation and a new generation of listeners to the medium.

This is true. If they were just a hosting company, we’d probably be singing their praises. I haven’t heard anybody complain about RSSBlue or PodHome which both charge for their services. But they’ve chosen to attach their open hosting brand to their closed player brand and chosen to obfuscate their splits. Which is fine, I understand the appeal of ā€œease of useā€, but I also know bitcoiners tend to be a more technical and independent crowd, and I want them to know there are other avenues available that may align more with their values.

Maybe that’s the issue I’ve been having. I don’t care how people run their business, but I care about honesty. If you charge for your service or take a percentage of a bands money, you’re not v4v. It doesn’t make you bad, but don’t claim to be something you’re not. If you claim to be for independent artists, but they depend on you, they’re no longer independent. If you claim to be open but don’t let outsiders in, you’re not open.

I don’t care if they’re a take a split, easy hosting, play only Wavlake music platform. Their business model makes a lot of sense if their goal is running a business and attracting customers, and I have zero problems with that goal. My problem is when they claim to be one thing, but from my perspective, their actions look like something else.
