On the quest to live a mindful, happy, healthy, long life.

"Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, 'What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.'

Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope." -- Vincent van Gogh

"What a time could be better than childhood, and what virtues could be better than innocent joyfulness, and the need for love? They are the purest manifestations of life. You should respect every person, but you should respect a child above all, and not destroy the innocent purity of his soul." -- Leo Tolstoy

Casey Means on the importance of daily walking:

"Simply walking about 10,000 steps per day (as compared with lower amounts) is associated with the following:

-) 50 percent lower dementia risk

-) 50 to 70 percent lower risk of premature death

-) 44 percent lower risk of getting type 2 diabetes

-) 31 percent (or more) lower risk of obesity

-) Significant reductions in cancer occurrence, major depression, gastric reflux, and sleep apnea"

"Every man becomes what he teaches others to be. Those who gain victory over themselves will gain victory over others. It is most difficult to achieve victory over oneself. Every man has power only over himself." -- Dhammapada, a book of Buddhist Wisdom

"The pounds of molecular information we put into our bodies daily impact our health. Every thought you have and feeling you feel comes from food. Inside your mother's body, you were 3D printed out of food, and every item you ingest continues to print the next iteration of yourself." -- Casey Means

"There is no past and no future; no one has ever entered those two imaginary kingdoms. There is only the present. Do not worry about the future, because there is no future. Live in the present and for the present, and if your present is good, then it is good forever.

If you have difficult times, if you suffer from the loss of loved ones or from fears about the future, remember that life exists only in the present and direct all your thoughts and memories to this present. All your anguish about the past and your worries about the future will disappear, and you will feel freedom and happiness." -- Leo Tolstoy

According to Dr. Casey Means cutting these three ingredients from your diet will completely change your health and ensure you're making room for nutritious, healthy food, regardless of which diet you adhere to:

-) Refined added sugar

-) Refined industrial vegetable and seed oils

-) Refined grains

I personally have been eating a whole food plant based diet for nearly 9 years now and it's completely transformed my life. I finally managed to lose weight and improve my blood markers, especially the lipid profile, which is really hard for me, as my genetics are not great in that regard. I've never felt more vibrant and healthy.

An ode to broccoli πŸ₯¦ by Dr. Casey Means, MD:

"You could see broccoli as simply a green veggie. Or you could see it more accurately as an ecosystem of molecular components that can support many of the hallmarks of Good Energy by quelling oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. The high fiber content of broccoli feeds your gut bacteria and lining, minimizing leaky gut and chronic inflammation and helping to produce mitochondria-optimizing chemicals like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Its vitamin C protects your mitochondria from oxidative stress. Vitamin K decreases mitochondrial dysfunction by serving as a mitochondrial electron carrier. And folate serves as a lock-and-key cofactor in the mitochondrial proteins that generate ATP. Broccoli also contains numerous antioxidants that protect your cells from oxidative damage."

Luckily, I love #broccoli and happen to eat it every day for breakfast as part of Bryan Johnson's Super Veggie Bowl.

Bull runs are always exciting!!! πŸš€ πŸš€ πŸš€ Still, it's important to remember to stay humble and give back. I derive the most pleasure from the fact that I'm now in a better position to help family, friends and others than just a few days ago.

"Most of the chronic symptoms we battle today are simply different expressions of the same disaster: the mitochondria are hurt by the way we’re living, a poorly powered cell becomes dysfunctional, the immune system tries to help but can’t, and, in trying, the immune system makes the issue worse." -- Casey Means MD

We damage our #mitochondria, #cells and ultimately the whole body in the following ways, which are tightly linked:

-) Chronic Overnutrition

-) Nutrient Deficiencies

-) Microbiome Issues

-) Sedentary Lifestyle

-) Chronic Stress

-) Medications and Drugs

-) Sleep Deprivation

-) Environmental Toxins and Pollutants

-) Artificial Light and Circadian Disruption

-) Thermoneutrality

I've started reading the #book "Good Energy" by Dr. Casey Means and Calley Means. It's about our molecular #health and its ripple effects throughout the body. When our #cells are healthy and are thus able to produce lots of good energy (ATP) in the #mitochondria, a lot of preventable diseases can be eliminated. Helping our cells is a path to the #goodlife.

Our cells are wonder machines. They engage in far too many processes to count, but their activities can broadly be grouped into these seven categories:

1) Cells synthesize approximately 70.000 different types of proteins needed for all aspects of building and operating the body.

2) Cells replicate their DNA and repair any damage to the DNA to prevent mutations.

3) Cells signal via biochemical messages what needs to be done inside and outside of the cell.

4) Cells transport molecular material all around the cell. They package, label and ship theses molecules with incredible precision.

5) Cells are constantly working to maintain healthy operation conditions (homeostasis).

6) Cells recycle and cleanup their own components via a process called autophagy.

7) Cells produce energy, in the form of ATP.

I loved this latest Joe Rogan Experience with my favorite physicist Brian Cox. Brian is such a beautiful human being. I could listen to him for hours explaining the mysteries of the universe. He is able to explain the most complex theories so that the layman understands and leaves with awe, reverence and wonder about life. πŸ’›

Listen to Sam Harris talk about the #goodlife and how difficult it is for us to be fully satisfied with our lives, even though on the surface everything might seem fine. Hint: Blame your thoughts.

It's a short 1:46 min clip, so give it a try and let me know what you think.

I've been trying to embrace my "Sun Child" lately, as learned from Stefanie Stahl's book "The Child in You". I have to admit sometimes it's really hard, especially during the 2nd part of my cycle. I guess it's due to #hormones, but this shouldn't be an excuse. I just can't seem to be cheerful, lighthearted and open minded. Still, awareness helps and allows me not to wallow too much in self pity. Everything is transitory and this too shall pass.
