Reiserfs has an amazing tail packing feature that made it scale better than anything else when it came to a ton of small files.

Reiser4 was basically on the road to being the best parts of XFS/ext4/btrfs IMO.

Their research papers they'd release on their design work were great too

Sending billions to other countries seems insane especially when you can't control what they're doing with the money but it's really an insurance policy. International relations and trade is so complex and without understanding our supply chains for everything from food to minerals to fertilizers it's easy to point fingers and say they're doing something wrong

Really a fan of these arguments because nobody wants to sit down and start talking real numbers

what's wrong with the Lettuce Guac Bacon Tomato community?

LMAO I forgot I had this

Is heavy handed app store moderation good or bad? I can't keep up with the latest opinion

yeah I covered that above

The sanest thing America could do to improve our future is to end the Farm Bill.

The farmers that should have been out of business decades ago will scream bloody murder. The GOP will scream that socialists (LOL!) want to take away your hamburgers and make you eat soy. The dairy industry will literally shit a cheese brick. McDonalds will team up with Chick fil A to hire hitmen to take out the Democratic Senate majority leader. The pharma and insurance companies will publish papers showing that colon cancer and diabetes is good for you.

Americans are riddled with health issues directly attributed to our diets which could be resolved over time by e.g., allowing our beef and corn to actually be priced at the real market rate.

It would drive a lot of fast food out of business because it would be unaffordable to operate.

The pressure would reduce on our healthcare system over time.

But people wouldn't be able to eat a Big Mac/chicken nuggs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You don't want to upset the people. They like what they like.

There isn't any other software on the planet for email that guarantees that you could look at the RFCs 50 years from now, write code in the new hip language to those exact specifications, and successfully read all your mail without encountering errors.

ctr is from containerd and is lower level than docker itself.

There is a docker port for FreeBSD but it's poopy.

There is a fully docker compatible tool called nerdctl that can be used as a drop in replacement. Also handles docker compose. But it still has some rough edges on FreeBSD.

Also building images from Dockerfiles on FreeBSD is still something I can't figure out yet.

pkg install runj containerd

service containerd onestart

# required dir that should probably be created by containerd anyway

mkdir /var/lib/containerd/io.containerd.snapshotter.v1.zfs

ctr image pull --platform=linux docker.io/library/alpine:latest

ctr run --rm --tty --runtime wtf.sbk.runj.v1 --snapshotter zfs --platform linux docker.io/library/alpine:latest mylinuxcontainer uname -a

Linux 4.4.0 FreeBSD 13.2-RELEASE-p2 GENERIC x86_64 Linux

source: https://productionwithscissors.run/2022/09/04/containerd-linux-on-freebsd/

I successfully pulled and ran Docker images on FreeBSD yesterday. Linux docker images. On FreeBSD.

No VMs. No jails. Just works.

oops, my mistake :)

really love that software, hope I don't have to maintain it until I die... perfect solution for email archiving. Fixes noncompliant emails if it encounters them (unless GPG/PGP) and deduplicates your mail too

Interesting! Thanks for sharing
